One of my favorite NES games of all time. I have it on pause as I'm typing this post (for real!). On the other hand, further proof that Capcom has nothing else going for them? :(

Can't tell you how bummed I was to fill out that contest info, then take it to my mom to mail it, and have her point out that the issue was a year old :( Either way, I was hooked right up into the 64 era (at which point I became jaded and cynical; I've recovered though, no worries :)). That's awesome! I've beaten all the main FFs, myself, excluding the few you've mentioned. I wouldn't call those "main FFs" anyway ;) Being a series person, I hope you stick with me for the whole write-up.
And hey, if you're ever up for it, I'd be up for starting a FFXI or FFXIV group. The biggest aspect of those games that turned me off was sitting around and finding a party; that was annoying. If we got a Team PixlBit thing going... well... that'd justify the subscription right there, in my book.
Hey hey, can't tell you how glad I am to see Abobo in the house! It's true; FF1 is quite an aged game, by any reasonable standards. Nothing grates quite like that "Ineffective" message you get when you attack an enemy that is no longer alive :) The sprites can't be stopped, though. They really start coming into their own once the SNES gets going. Glad to have you here, man :)

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! While FF1 has the softest spot in my heart, FF2/4 certainly occupies the next most soft of spots :) Many, many a fond memories playing that game back in the day. I've taken to playing the Bioshocks, Uncharteds, God of Wars and Dishonoreds of the world on hard mode right off the bat. The first few hours take some getting used to, but once you acclimate, it doesn't feel much different from normal mode. Which I guess is the point of your rant...
As a side note, I felt like Darksiders was a decidedly mediocre game. Don't quite understand the plaudits it received in the gaming press... I mean, Zelda+GoW is kind of a neat idea, I suppose, but in execution, I wasn't feeling it. And I'm a big fan of both series.
As for replayability, I really like how Dishonored handled it. Rather than give you specific objectives that increase with difficulty a la Thief (or 007 Goldeneye on 64; blast from the past), you can complete your objectives in all sorts of ways... I can't wait to go back through and try a different (and undoubtedly harder) method of play next time.
There are definitely a couple that I had to power through on commitment/nostalgia alone. It's not that they're bad games, just that there are better games to play. If I were coming to the series fresh and wanted to play all of them, I'd go in numerical order, because, generally speaking, the game design improves with each iteration. There are some dips, but they get better. Then you get to Final Fantasy XIII... ;) Just kidding, I dug Final Fantasy XIII, and I hope to offer it a small measure of redemption when I get to it on the quest.
