E3 2012 Predictions

The PixlBit Staff sounds off before this year's big show kicks off.

Esteban's Predictions

Microsoft

Right now the Xbox 360 is the best selling console but the exclusive titles that are coming out for the platform are Halo 4, Fable: The Journey and that's about it. This puts Microsoft in an interesting position. Either their conference will be rather predictable with mostly third party developers showcasing titles that we already know about such as Assassin's Creed III, Borderlands 2 and BioShock Infinite or it'll be the most surprising of this year if Microsoft does have all these first person titles that haven't been announced yet.

Kinect will probably be showcased a lot again but I think there will be a shift in focus. Rather than show new Kinect titles, Kinect functionality as an optional control method will be the center of attention. Kinect games haven't really done the device justice but Kinect integration in other games like Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim have been better received. Microsoft will probably latch onto that.

Microsoft will most likely announce the Summer of Arcade lineup and I predict that one of the titles will be The Behemoth's BattleBlock Theatre. After four years, I think this game should be done right now. Also, the port of Guilty Gear XX ^ Core Plus might be one of the titles as well. I'm excited to see what else will be on the lineup though as a fan of the service.

Sony

Sony's conference will focus on the PlayStation Vita and they will announce a slew of new titles for it. We'll see Vita titles of Call of Duty, and inFamous, as well as some new IPs as well. I predict that we'll see a Vita price drop to $200 and $250 for the Wi-Fi and 3G versions respectively and perhaps a cloud saving feature will be introduced to counter the memory card's high price point.

The PlayStation 3 will have the bigger announcements of the conference but it won't be the majority of it. We'll learn more about God of War: Ascention and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale with gameplay demos as well as specific details about the games, such as the storyline and characters, respectively. Now that a new Ratchet & Clank game has been announced, there will probably be a part of the presentation talking about the series' 10th anniversary, as well as the HD Collection and a tease of a Vita title.

The PlayStation Move will be almost non-existent and Sony won't mention 3D as much either. This year will show Sony being more conservative with what they show with only the Vita stuff being where they push aggressively.

Nintendo

After the lukewarm reception of the Wii U at last year's E3, this year is going to be all about games and not just about games, but big named games as well as more unknown titles with really interesting concepts. This means we'll see Mario, Pikmin, and whatever Retro Studios is working on, 1st party wise. We'll see a big push of third party developers and see titles like Call of Duty and perhaps Borderlands 2 on the Wii U. New third party IPs will also be shown in droves. Third party titles will be the focus of the Wii U.

One of the big announcements could be a JRPG available at the Wii U's release, which would be a response to the reception towards The Last Story and Xenoblade Chronicles. Perhaps it'll be a port of a existing RPG with tablet functionality like a Tales game or Dragon Quest X. Kirby's Anniversary will be discussed as well as the collection but all other anniversaries won't be mentioned. Pandora's Tower will be announced for the US for the Wii and that'll be the extent of the Wii coverage.

A considerable portion of the conference will be all about 3DS titles coming up, including New Super Mario Bros 2, Paper Mario, and Luigi's Mansion. Again, third party titles will be a considerable amount of the titles show. The showcase will culminate in the announcement of a new 3DS model. It'll have a second circle pad, improved battery life, and some minor design changes. It won't be smaller though and will be released at the same price point and replace the current model.
