PixlBit's 2013 Sneak Preview: The Wild Cards

Expect the unexpected, and keep hope alive!

Star Wars 1313

We leave you with possibly the biggest wild card in this preview: Star Wars 1313. Like Watch Dogs, this game is almost assuredly intended for next gen consoles and high end PCs. The brief gameplay demo shown at E3 last year turned the heads of many a jaded gamer, and the idea of a gritty, more mature take on the Star Wars universe is a breath of fresh (or is that smoggy?) air after kid friendly outings like the Clone Wars and Lego Star Wars games.

Set on the planet of Coruscant, the world famous in Star Wars lore for being one continuous city, 1313 takes a look at the depths of the planet, where even the scum and villainy of Mos Eisley would fear to tread. You play a bounty hunter with a mission that seems to go from bad to worse in moments, if the trailer is any indication. Uncharted meets Star Wars is the most apt description of the gameplay shown so far, and that doesn’t sound too shabby.

So why the wild card moniker? Well, Star Wars has a rather uneven track record when it comes to video games. For every Knights of the Old Republic and Rogue Squadron you have a Masters of Teras Kasi or a Super Bombad Racing. Considering that no information on the game has been released since that E3 reveal, 1313 is looking murky, at best.

Let’s not forget that the Star Wars empire was recently purchased by Disney, while we’re at it. Disney has been very vocal about not being too interested in the video game space anymore, or at least not the high-risk triple-A console game space. The company is more interested in simpler social and mobile games, and even though they have gone on record as saying that the acquisition would not impact any games in current development it’s worth noting that they axed a reportedly decent (and almost complete) Pirates of the Caribbean action/RPG a couple of years ago.
