Nerds Without Pants Episode 86: Chrono Crossing

The Pantsless Ones unveil a new segment!

Welcome welcome, to the first episode of a new era for Nerds Without Pants! We are launching a new segment this episode: Chrono Crossing, wherein we take a look back at our favorite games of each year, beginning with 2015. We kick off this episode with this new feature, and have some great input from our lovely listeners!

In Consumption Junction, Julian's Final Fantasy addiction reaches a new high, while Patrick is becoming quite the rocksmith. Julian gushes over his awesome Ikea adventure, and Angelo is just one step away from working at a tabletop gaming store. It's a light episode of NWP this week, but a very fun one.

Next time, we will be Chrono Crossing to 2014, so let us know your favorite game that was released that year, and we will read it on the show! It's a New Day for NWP, so raise up your unicorn horns!

Hi guys!

I know it's a bit late to comment on the best game of 2015, but for me I'd go with either Undertale, Tales from the Borderlands or Fallout 4.

For the next episode: 2014 for me was Destiny, followed up by Wasteland 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition! Lemme know if there's a better place to leave these.

How could I have somehow forgotten about Destiny?

Because it feels like Destiny came out 5 years ago?

Let's see, some 2014 favorites:

1) Dark Souls II
2) Smash for Wii U/3DS
3) South Park: The Stick of Truth
4) Guacamelee: Super Turbo Champinonship Edition!
5+6) Danganronpa 1 and 2
7) Shovel Knight
8) Mario Kart 8

Games I still need to get to that would likely make the list:

Bayonetta 2 and DKC: TF

My pick for 2014 is Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition for PS4. I know this choice may be brushing up against the rule that HD remakes and such are not allowed as a choice (and if this does, let me know) but: 1) its the definitive version of the game on consoles so it felt like I was actually playing the game for the first time, 2) I wasn't able to play the game on PC, 3) it was released in 2014 and 4) it gave me more joy than anything else released that year. This was my first purchase for the PS4 (the console was bought the week before the game's release) and I continue to play it to this day. The controls are perfect as well as the leveling system and co-op mode. It looks and runs beautifully on consoles and the Adventure Mode ensures that I can and do play this game forever.

You know, I will bend the rule because you make a good case, especially since you couldn't play it before. I'll allow it!

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was definitely my favorite game of 2015. I know it is late, just thought I would throw that in. It's right up there with my favorite games of all time.

For 2014 it comes down to either Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition or Shadow of Mordor. I am going with Shadow of Mordor; I am not usually a fan of open world games, so the fact that I platted this game says a lot. The Nemesis System was the highlight of the game, especially at the end of the game (won't spoil it). I liked the combat and powers you could get, everything about the gameplay made it fun to play. Also the fact that this is a Lord of the Rings game had that going against it for me.  I can say with confidence that it was the best game I played in 2014.

Aww, you missed our recording by a day! Shadow of Mordor is a close second for me that year, and I think it was originally my pick back then. My selection has changed though, so you'll have to let me know what you think of my pick.

Today I'm getting all nerdy and pantless, catching up on some good NWP podcasts. I love the titles to your segements: Consumption Junction, Crono Crossing.

My 2014 fav was: Wolfenstein: New Order. You got that old school FPS gameplay with new school graphics and story telling. Dual-wielding rocket launchers never felt better.

Thanks! I'm leaning towards Stage Select for our next new segment, so stay tuned! Wolfenstein came up a lot in the conversation, so please look forward to it!

My 2015 game would in fact be Rocket League. It was the surprise of the year. Good choice for #3, Patrick. I have yet to get past the street in Yarnam where the carriages are in Bloodborne (probably several, but that's the best way I can describe where I left the game before removing it to make room). I don't think it's scary, but I don't love the immediate difficulty spike.

Wish I could play Splatoon, but Wii U just doesn't interest me enough. I'd like to play Bayonetta 2 and some first party games, but not enough to buy a console. Zelda is the only thing that would get me to do it and given that it's on the Switch as well ...

Until Dawn was great! I really want to get it now for $20 (physical is same price at my GameStop, so might as well go that route) even after watching a playthrough on KittyKatGaming past where I left off in my rental. I just want to PLatinum it by getting all the possibilities. I can see myself playing it several times just to see "what if."

Rise of the Tomb Raider is great on PS4. That'd be my pick for 2015 had I played it that year. I agree that it's very similar to 2013 Tomb Raider and having played it, I'm with you Julian. I know I read Casey's review, but I forget what his argument was.
