The Skyrim Primer

A beginners guide to the realm of Skyrim.

The Lay of the Land

The Elder Scrolls games all take place in the fictional world of Nirn and more specifically on the continent of Tamriel.  Tamriel is an extraordinarily large landmass that is divided into nine realms: Cyrodiil, Morrowind, High Rock, The Summerset Isles, Hammerfell, Black Marsh, Valenwood, Elsweyr and of course Skyrim.  Every game in the series has been set on this continent with the notable exceptions of The Elder Scrolls Legends: Battlespire and segments of Oblivion that were set in the extra dimensional world of Oblivion, Nirn’s version of Hell.

As the title indicates, The Elder Scrolls’ latest game takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost province in Tamriel.  The northern territory is expectantly rocky and inhospitable, being inhabited by the Nords, a thinly veiled rendition of Norse Vikings.  The Nord people war amongst themselves as separate provinces, leading to a schism that has been foretold in the Elder Scrolls concerning the return of Dragons.

Excellent article. I pre-ordered Skyrim 2 weeks ago because of reviews and the subject. This is my first venture into Elder Scrolls and very beneficial for an introduction that is "assumed" knowledge by most gamers. I'm even more psyched about the release Friday!!!

Wow. Jesse, absolutely wonderful article. I didn't know this much about the game and now I'm so excited for it! One more month and I'll have the opportunity to try this game out. Very informative article and extremely well done. +5 Awesomeness!

Dragons are the main reason this game is hyped?

No, sorry but most probably don't even care about the dragons.

Dragons were definitely one of the most promoted things at E3, I'm not saying that's all there is, but I think they're probably the most featured new elements of the Elder Scrolls games.
