The Skyrim Primer

A beginners guide to the realm of Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls Foretell a Bleak Future

Interestingly enough, the Elder Scrolls themselves don’t really have a central place in any of the games.  It wasn’t until The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion that the scrolls even made an actual appearance on screen in any of the games.

What we do know about the scrolls is rather limited.  They tell of both the past and the future, serving mainly as a means of anchoring the story in the world of Nirn.  Even though the scrolls tell of apocalyptic events, these events are not certain and the future can be changed.  If it comes to pass that the actions of a hero change the future, the writings in the scrolls will change with those events.

In Skyrim the scrolls have prophesized that the dragons under Alduin, the Nordic god of destruction, will return to the land after a schism between the people occurs.  The assassination of Skyrim’s High King has divided the people into two groups: those that wish to stay a part of the empire and those that wish to secede and form their own sovereign nation.  This divide would be the final step in the apocalyptic prophesy and serves as the game’s launching point. Our hero is the last remaining member of a fated people that has been given the ability to fight the dragons and have a chance of winning.

Excellent article. I pre-ordered Skyrim 2 weeks ago because of reviews and the subject. This is my first venture into Elder Scrolls and very beneficial for an introduction that is "assumed" knowledge by most gamers. I'm even more psyched about the release Friday!!!

Dragons are the main reason this game is hyped?

No, sorry but most probably don't even care about the dragons.

Dragons were definitely one of the most promoted things at E3, I'm not saying that's all there is, but I think they're probably the most featured new elements of the Elder Scrolls games.
