The Skyrim Primer

A beginners guide to the realm of Skyrim.

Here There Be Dragons!

Let’s be honest, the main reason that Skyrim is generating as much hype as it is, is that it’s the first game in the Elder Scroll series to feature the mythical flying beasts.

Dragon encounters in Skyrim are random, but won’t start occurring until you’ve begun to delve into the main storyline and will increase in frequency as you progress.  Facing off with a dragon may not be the most savvy of decisions for a player, so it’s good to know that while these encounters may occur at random, the player always has the choice to take the better part of valor and run away.

There are four races of dragon known at this time, each with their own attributes and tendencies: red dragons, black dragons, fire dragons and the mighty frost dragons.

Fortunately, not all of Skyrim’s dragons will be out to eat you.  Dragons are intelligent creatures capable of language and as such some will attempt to communicate with the player, opening up a variety of different plot and character development possibilities.

While communication with the player will be done in the “Common Language,” dragons have their own tongue referred to as Dragonish or Draconian that will have a prominent role in the game.  The player will have the opportunity to learn small parts of the language to use powerful spells called “Dragon Shouts,” an obscure and ancient magic that was once quite prominent in Tamriel.

Excellent article. I pre-ordered Skyrim 2 weeks ago because of reviews and the subject. This is my first venture into Elder Scrolls and very beneficial for an introduction that is "assumed" knowledge by most gamers. I'm even more psyched about the release Friday!!!

Dragons are the main reason this game is hyped?

No, sorry but most probably don't even care about the dragons.

Dragons were definitely one of the most promoted things at E3, I'm not saying that's all there is, but I think they're probably the most featured new elements of the Elder Scrolls games.
