Mortal Kombat Returning to Theaters?

The director of Glee 3D hired by New Line.

Last year, relatively unknown director Kevin Tancharoen released a video online called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. It was unclear at first just what it was supposed to be; a trailer for the upcoming game series reboot, or a trailer for a new film. As it turns out, it was neither one, but instead a project Tancharoen did to show what he would like to do if he was given the chance to work on a new Mortal Kombat movie.

That video, starring Michael Jai White as Jax and Jerri Ryan as Sonya, got turned into a web series this year, titled Mortal Kombat: Legacy. The series was generally well received, and the gritty, realistic spin on the well-established Mortal Kombat story generated a lot of buzz.

That buzz has led Kevin Tancharoen to a job as director of a new Mortal Kombat movie for New Line Cinema. It is unclear at this moment if Michael Jai White and Jerri Ryan will reprise their roles, or if the new film will even be related to the Fame director’s web series. As of now, there continues to be a battle over the film rights between Warner and Lawrence Kasanoff, a producer on the older films that claims to have ownership over the Mortal Kombat movie universe.
