This reeks of BS. As a developer I can tell you it's unlikely that code isn't available in a multitude of locations. While no one may have the most up to date version, it's likely available in some form some where. I'm guessing something else was up.
Japanese/Korean MMO Accidentally Deleted
Crucial code lost during maintenance brought the whole game down.
Players of the Japanese and Korean MMO M2 had a very bad day at the end of October. The end of the month also brought about the end of the game, when it was accidentally deleted after being taken down for maintenance.
Japanese game developer Sankando took the game down for maintenance on October 21st when integral code was accidentally deleted from the company's servers. Unfortunately, there was no backup and the code wasn't stored anywhere else, forcing a permanent closure of the game.
Some are suspicious as to what may have happened and question the explanation Sandando and the game's Korean operator, Hangame, gave as it seems to be an amateur and unlikely mistake to make.
