Augmented Reality Comes to Books with Wonderbook

Sony's latest will debut with a special book/game from JK Rowling.

During last night's Sony presentation, the company lifted the veil on their latest work, Wonderbook. Using this generic AR marker, players will be able to read books on the screen and interact with the book in unique ways. The Wonderbook appears to be a platform of sorts as it will host a variety of different books, first and most notably, Book of Spells from JK Rowling.

The Wonderbook will come to life via the PlayStation Eye and will feature a variety of books that can engage their readers in unique ways. Book of Spells was specifically showcased, giving players a glimpse of what the platform has to offer. The book walked players through casting spells using the PlayStation Move controller and then put them to the test with a quick mini-game.

Alohomora was used to open a lock, which allowed players to move on to the next page. Incendio was used to light different items in a room on fire and players could also simply use their hands to interact with different elements in the virtual book.

It's not clear if traditional books will make their way to the new platform at this time or just new tales made specifically for the medium. As of right now, outside of Book of Spells, it's only known that Moonbot Studios is working on a unique production.

Players will be reading enhanced books on their PlayStation 3 with Wonderbook this fall.
