This is one of the games that I am most excited about. I love alternate histories, steampunk aesthetics and secret societies. I think that Ready at Dawn is up to the task of making a home console release.
The Order: 1886 Preview
All we know about this PlayStation 4 exclusive (which isn't a whole lot).
There was plenty of excitement about the final salvo Sony fired at their E3 press conference on Monday night, maybe to such a degree that they forgot about an exclusive PlayStation 4 game that debuted before the grand finale. The only new exclusive game revealed during the conference, The Order: 1886 looks like it could satisfy our collective need for new properties on our flashy new console.
There isn’t much known about The Order yet, and what we do know can mainly be gleaned from the sole trailer we’ve seen and a few tidbits from Sony. Clearly taking place in an alternate version of Victorian London, an ancient order of knights is continuing its fight against… some sort of fast-moving humanoids. No worries about facing off against played out shambling zombies here, as the shadowy creatures attacking a group of knights move quickly and even climb their way up poles to get better vantage points.
The surrounded knights made it clear that there’s going to be a pretty wide variety of weapons to toy around with, showing firearms ranging from a small-scale Luger style pistol to a massive scatter-shot blaster. Each of the weapons has an interesting steam-punk aesthetic that fits in with the zeppelin-filled skies of this alternate London. It looks like an interesting landscape to spend some time in, especially if everything shown is truly made in-engine as is claimed.
The developer, Ready at Dawn studios, has a good resume behind them, although they’ve yet to delve into a full-scale console release. Most of their previous games were PlayStation Portable spinoff games in the proven God of War and Jak and Daxter series. That’s no reason to have serious doubts, though, as they’ve consistently produced some solid work.
Beyond these base-level facts, all that’s left is to speculate about what this game might consist of. Does the four-person group shown in the trailer indicate this is a co-op game with each player focusing on a particular skill set? The weapon and character pairings might indicate this is the case. Of course, it could be that some of the roles will be filled with A.I. behaviors and it’s simply a single player adventure. At this point, though, that’s part of the fun – wondering what could be. We’ll just have to wait for more details to trickle out, including the planned release date.
