Donkey Kong Country Returns Review

Waggle controls nearly ruin what could've been an outstanding game.

After a fourteen year hiatus, the Donkey Kong Country series has returned thanks to a combined Retro Studios and Nintendo effort. This return to the beloved series is, for the most part, a good one; however, the game's controls are extremely problematic, particularly, finicky analog stick controls in 2D and unreliable motion control that performs many of the game’s core functions. Combine this with a distinct lack of heart, and Donkey Kong Country Returns doesn’t quite match up to its SNES predecessors.

Power Gig: Rise of the SixString Review

Why include a real guitar if you aren't going to get to play it like one?

As a guitarist, I find Power Gig: Rise of the Six String almost offensive. It had built my hopes up to hear that a true guitar would be included in a modern rhythm game. In my head, I imagined getting the opportunity to truly strum out some tracks, and learn to play some new songs in a manner I've never had the opportunity of doing. But no, rather than using the guitar like an actual guitar, players are stuck doing the same old Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange button-based notes, with an occasional real power chord thrown in. Even worse, by now everyone is used to playing on a standard plastic guitar controller, making this feel like some unnatural compromise between playing that and playing the real thing.

Super Meat Boy Review

One of the most finely crafted games of this generation.

Since the birth of the downloadable platform this generation, we have seen many great games; however, very few have managed to surpass being a cheap, quick thrill and achieve true greatness. A couple of years back I had the opportunity to review World of Goo, and I walked away utterly stunned by the experience. Today, I'm here to say that such an experience is once again available to the gaming world in Super Meat Boy. The simple platformer is so amazing in its execution, that it's absolutely irresistible.
