Developer: Natsume

Publisher: Taito

Genre: Beat 'em up

Release: 1994

Currently available on: cartridge only

About the game: In Ninja Warriors, you take on the role of three androids to combat a tyrannical overlord in a dystopian future. Yeah, the plot here is typical, but the gameplay is what makes this game so great. Each android plays differently. Kunoichi is the female ninja who is the most balanced, using a katana sword and knives. Kamaitachi is the fastest and uses sickles on chains as his weapon. Ninja uses nunchaku and is the slowest of the bunch. The game has eight stages, most levels being some kind of base of operations that you must infiltrate. This is a side-scrolling game that plays on one plane, meaning it's different from most beat 'em ups, but that's not a problem at all. There's quite a variety of enemies, and some of them can really tough, such as the huge robots that you can only harm from the back. The protagonists have a lot of cool moves when fighting, and the bosses are really great. The only downside here is that the game is only single player.

Why I love it: This is another one I played on an emulator, but I have since then bought the cartridge (it was expensive). I love beat 'em ups, and this is one of my favorites. Beating up enemies in this game is really satisfying. The presentation here is good too. When you beat a boss, the screen says "Mission Accomplished," which actually feels like you accomplished something great. The game is hard, but thanks to the unlimited continues, you can beat it with enough persistence. Taito recently released an enhanced port of the arcade game in Japan, and hopefully we will see it released here soon. This port is for PS4 and Switch, and is two players! I'm so glad Taito has not forgotten about this series.

Like Darius, The Ninja Warriors in the arcade was three screens long.  I only saw Darius in two arcades, but I saw The Ninja Warriors EVERYWHERE.  And it was in those arcades for a long time, too!  I never really got into it like I did Darius, though.

I did review The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors last year.  It's not a remake of the arcade game, but it's a remake of the SNES game you just talked about!  I never played it on the SNES since I wasn't that big into the arcade game.

I didn't realize Ninja Saviors was out in the US on the Switch! I will definitely be picking that up today. Glad to see it's a remake of the SNES game because I adore it!

Nothing beats tyrannical dystopian overlords like a ninja!

great graphics, too!

Yeah, ninjas were all the rage in the 80s, and still popular in the 90s too. I, of course, am a huge ninja fan (if you couldn't tell)

I remember the ads for this game on SNES. I kind of want to play the Ninja Saviors game on Switch.

You should get it, it's so good! Plus, it's two players!

I love beat 'em ups. I'll have to check this out when I get a hold of it. I never saw it in the arcades. Must've been a sight with three screens. Probably cost a buck to play too.

Yeah, and you can actually get the digital remake of this game for PS4 and Switch, it's called "The Ninja Saviors." It's definitely worth it!

I had never heard of this before the remake came out. Sounds like you've probably played that by now. What do you think of it (the remake)?

Yes, just got the remake, it's excellent. Unfortunately, the game is actually harder with two players because you have to share one lifebar, but it's a very good game.
