Developer: Capcom

Publisher: Capcom

Genre: Beat 'em up

Release: 1994

Currently available on: cartridge only

About the game: This game allows you to play as five different X-Men characters: Cyclops, Wolverine, Psylocke, Gambit, and Beast. Each one has unique moves and abilities. Also, you get to choose which stage to play (as each character has their own mission). Each level has you infiltrating some kind of enemy base and destroying something. Once these levels are complete, you will be able to move on to the next set of levels and use any of the characters. Beating up bad guys is really satisfying here due to the excellent graphics and sound. Gameplay is superb, even utilizing special abilities, such as Cyclops' blast attack, Wolverine climbing up walls, and Gambit's kinetic cards. A lot of fan service here too with plenty of X-Men villains showing up.

Why I love it: I vaguely remember my cousin playing this game back when I was a young kid, so when I was old enough, I found a copy of the game and bought it. WOW! I was amazed at how great this game was! Each character is fun to use, and levels aren't monotonous due to unique obstacles and clever design. It's not a hard game (especially if you use Gambit's card throwing attack). I think Capcom actually managed to combine features from Mega Man, Street Fighter, and Final Fight here to create something really special. Graphics are nice too with big detailed characters. In my opinion, this is the best X-Men game to appear on a 16-bit console.

Since I was never into comic books that much, I didn't play very many of the comic book games on the SNES.  This one included.  I think I might've rented a couple of comic book games when I knew I would have a friend over who liked comic books, but I think that was just regulated to a couple of Superman titles.

My knowledge of X-Men and other Marvel characters mostly comes from Marvel vs. Capcom games, LEGO games, and the movies.  I don't really even have a favorite Marvel character.  Although if I had to pick one, She-Hulk from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was kind of neat I guess.

You really missed out because there are some excellent comic book games on SNES, including this one, Batman Returns, Marvel Superheroes: War of the Gems, The Adventures of Batman and Robin, and The Death and Return of Superman. These are all solid games.

Ever since I played X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I want to play every game with Wolverine in it.

lol yes, Wolverine is awesome in this game. It's just so fun to slash with those claws, y'know?

I love melee fighting games. I think I like them better than shooters, gasp.

I don't remember this one, probably because there were so many terrible 16-bit superhero games.

True, but this is one of the best. It's right up there with Batman Returns.

Ah, those were the days for X-Men fans. Nowadays? Ug.

Yeah, the X-Men were HUGE in the 90s. These days they've been replaced by the Avengers.

This game made me think Gambit was cool. Psylocke was awesome too.

Man, I loved this game. Yet another one I might want to hack onto my SNES Mini ...
