Developer: Taito

Publisher: Taito

Genre: Puzzle

Release: 1995

Currently available on: Game Gear, Neo Geo CD, Neo Geo MVS, Wonder Swan, PS4, Switch, Xbox One

About the game: Bust-a-Move is a simple yet addictive puzzle game in which you shoot up orbs and try to group orbs of the same color so that they fall away. The game stars Taito's adorable Bubble Bobble characters Bub and Bob. You start with a certain number of orbs on screen. As you play, the ceiling will start to lower. You have to clear all the orbs before the ceiling moves all the way down. It's not difficult and can be very fun. The main one player mode has a total of 100 levels (the last of which is the game's only boss). And, of course, there is also a two player mode.

Why I love it: I picked up this game one day because I enjoy puzzle games. But wow, this game was super addicting! I started playing the one player mode and I was determined to beat it. I remember thinking, "How many levels are there?" Some levels were tricky, but I managed to make it through. I've played quite a few puzzle games on SNES, and I think that Bust-a-Move is one of the absolute best. It's simple, fun, relaxing, and totally addicting, four qualities that should characterize any good puzzle game. And people clearly love it, as it's been ported to just about everything.

Never played the SNES version of this, but I can remember when it was a staple of Neo-Geo machines, and in fact, I have the Neo-Geo version on the Switch.  It's a fun game, but sometimes frustratingly random.

Taito made a slightly different variation of this game called Puzzle de Pon! You were required to destroy all the bubbles around an object in the game board to complete the level.

Bust-A-Move is one of my top three favorite puzzle games, right on up there with plain old Tetris and Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo.  Although I hate the name "Bust-A-Move."  I wish they kept the name from the overseas release, which was Puzzle Bobble.  That name just makes more sense!

Anyway, I mostly played it in the arcade back then, but I did rent it on the SNES.  I would've owned it on the SNES, but I didn't have as much money back then.  Since now I have a bit more money to spend, I usually get any version of the game that comes out now, and have been since the Dreamcast and NEO GEO Pocket days.

I wonder if Taito wishes they would've had a more strict copyright patent on that game since now everyone copies it on mobile devices.  And speaking of Peanuts games from your last blog, one of those was called Snoopy Pop:

But Taito still makes Bust-A-Move games and their last one was for mobile devices as well.  It's called Bust-A-Move Journey.

I just saw a bunch of these games on Xbox One's store the other day. I kind of like a match-3 type game a bit better but I did like this similar game called Puchi Carat on one of Taito's collections.
