The 3DS and Wii U have been off the market for years. It's costing Nintendo more to keep the lights on than they're making in sales. Same thing with the freak out over the VIta storefront closing. People don't care until they hear the plug is being pulled, then they panic even though very few of them have visited the old storefront.

Hello everyone, how are you?
Yes, it's as you've heard it. Today Nintendo has announced that you will no longer be able to make purchases on both the Wii U and 3DS eShop.
When will this take effect? On March 2023. It's a little more over a year left for that, however if you are planning to buy games off from there you actually have far less time...
You have less time than you thought to actually buy anything. However what I find funny is this comment that they made...

What's even better is that they removed that statement from the page on their site. They know they are getting hate for it. I honestly hope they change their mind and they do what Sony did with their own digital shops. But Nintendo is stubborn and pretty much set in their ways, so I don't see them budging.
It doesn't mention what will happen to games that have their own digital storefront, there actually games on the 3DS that have their own dlc shop so that's also of concern. So if there's any pending games or dlc that you've yet to buy, do so while there's still time. There's still some stuff I now have to force myself to get before it is too late.
It's funny because Nintendo is so anti-piracy, yet this just encourages it even more which is really ironic. If you want more info then here's the link where Nintendo details all of this.
