Nintendo 3DS, 2016

Composers: Hirokazu Ando, Jun Ishikawa

Kirby music is always great—always upbeat, fun, and catchy. I would have picked Super Star, but Planet Robobot’s OST is simply fabulous. There are so many great songs here. Ando and Ishikawa are the veterans when it comes to Kirby music, which is probably why this OST is so perfect. Some Kirby games don’t quite have that Kirby flare to them, but Planet Robobot absolutely nails it. There are also a LOT of returning themes, such as Meta Knight’s theme, Dedede’s theme, Green Greens, and themes from Kirby 64 and other games. But for my favorites, I’ll do 5 original songs.

Lovely Yellow

This is a bouncy, fun theme that is a bit relaxing. The melody, while simple, is fine, and often gets stuck in my head. The whole song seems to be moving at a pace that is slightly too fast, but I think it works because it gives a feeling that you have to keep moving. You’ll hear some complain that Kirby games are too easy, but they usually don’t complain that they’re too slow, and perhaps the music helps with that.

Sky Blue Flight

This song plays for a flying level that plays like a shoot ‘em up. This is such a fun song! It’s once again very upbeat, fast-paced, and fun. The melody or a variation of the melody is almost constantly playing. The instruments combine nicely—the drums, piano, and lead instrument, which seems to be some kind of chiptune sound. The song is composed and put together so well that it’s just fun to listen to.

Combat Strength Measurement Program

This is the best song in the game imo. There are multiple songs that have this exact same theme, but this is the best one. It’s just really cool! An electric guitar runs away with the melody, backed up by a heavy beat and techno synths. The melody here is really strong. I especially like when the piano plays at 48 seconds because for a brief time, the song sounds a little bit like a Castlevania song. This is probably one of my favorite Kirby songs period.

Bountiful Star

Another fun, quickly paced Kirby song. This song really hearkens back to old Kirby themes from the Dream Land games and Super Star. The light flute that chimes in, the trumpets, and the rhythm of the song all combine very well. There’s also a strong adventurous feel to this one, which I definitely like. A lot of Kirby music has that adventurous feel.

Vs. Star Dream

Most Kirby games have excellent final boss themes, and this game is no exception. This song is grand, epic, fun, and combines themes that you’ve heard throughout the game. There’s an intensity to the song that speaks of a desperate need to win. At 2’03” you’ll hear Green Greens for a brief time, then the song will ramp up into a climax (listen for the voices in the background) before looping. It’s a great final boss theme!

ALL Kirby games have good music in them!  That's why they reuse so many themes.  I also love how the last boss in Planet Robobot is just a different version of Star Nova from Super Star.  Kirby games have a surprising amount of hidden lore!

The final bosses in Kirby games are always some kind of monstrous nightmare that want to destroy the universe, which I love since Kirby games are often derided as "kids games." There's ususally some creepy stuff in Kirby games! lol

Blue Sky Flight is like chiptune-infused jazz! Definitely a fun soundtrack.

I love this music! I've got to get into playing more Kirby games. I love the character designs too.

Kirby games are always really fun. The new Kirby game for Switch is coming out soon, and it looks great, so I would recommend you pick it up.
