Latest Game Purchases

I found this game in a bargain bin for $20. I loved Demon’s Souls a ton when I played it two years ago, but I decided to wait until this one was cheap since I wasn’t likely to be in the mood for something so punishing right away!

It’s not too surprising this game is one of my recent purchases considering I blogged about it not too long ago. Anyway, I finished it and I find the ending kinda overrated. Most notably, it’s the major revelation that the game ends with. For all those hours of build-up it sure felt abrupt and lacking the punch it should have had. Still a really good game though that is a worthy sequel to the original.

Even moreso than Dark Souls, I’ve basically been waiting for this game since it was released in 2010. Lunar is though one of many old RPGs I want to play that I feel I will get to eventually. Since I finally worked through my other PSP games I wanted to play, I decided at last to pick this one up.

I also found Gears of War 1 & 2 for pretty cheap used. I’ve been borrowing other people’s copies of these games on for years, so it’s about time I bought my own. Given recent events, these just might be the last used Xbox games I ever buy!

I picked up this game a whim because it seems like it might rise in price soon. Reviews say the gameplay is not so great but it is at least praised for its story. Which is the reason I wanted it anyway based on my high opinion of the anime Fate/Zero.

Finally, I probably made the quickest bargain bin purchase I’ve ever made when I saw Front Mission Evolved for $10 in a grocery store. I was just thinking the night before about looking for a good giant-mech game so I just grabbed this. Although this is an action game and not the deep strategy game that are the other Front Mission titles, it is still surprisingly fun if you can look passed the PS2-era graphics.

Still really need to play BioShock infinite. I enjoyed the first two and reckon I'll have a time with this one too, though I'll probably end up playing this a bit further down the line when I see it in a second hand store for next to nothing.... I might as well enjoy that sensation whilst I can!

Yeah, I mean it's already dropping in price really fast and who knows, with DLC on the way they might release a GoTY version pretty soon. Though I guess the second hand thing might not be a fleeting sensation afterall!

Awesome pick-ups there.

Yep, I thought so too.

Star Ocean Second Evolution is another PSP game hiking up in price drastically. Shame too because it's one of my favorite rpgs of all time!

I also have wanted to try the Star Ocean's on PSP. But don't tell me they are going up in price or I might buy another game I won't get to for a long time!

Luckily, the psp version of SO2 dropped back down to 29.99 on amazon. I was relieved when I saw that. lol.

Did great on that bunch of pics, Dark Souls is excellent abd your right very punishing but my advice is to grind alot early and get to level 15 before really starting out and of course Yargze has some good YouTube vids, Bioshock Infinite i still need to get cause it got awesome reveiws, and Lunar i want to get for the Pkaystation cause im a collector and really want it in my collection but its extremely pricey.

I have come across those video blogs of Dark Souls he has been posting. I will likely watch some of those once I am well into the game. Lunar is really good, but yeah, I kind of wish I had the PS1 version. They changed the visuals in this one and even though they are smoother, the old games' visuals just seem more its style.

Dark Souls is my favourite game of this generation, and I'm not a fan of hard games.

Also, I agree about Bioshock's ending. It was too rushed and had too much exposition, and it just didn't feel natural unfortunately.

Damn, Demon's Souls is certainly up there for me. I hope I like Dark Souls as much as you did!

Glad to see someone agreeing with me on Bioshock's ending. I have only seen universal praise on that ending so far.

Darks Souls?

YES YES YES YES YES!!

I've been playing Bioshock Infinite quite a bit here in the last few days. I decided to go through it again and nab the missing Voxophones I missed in hopes of getting some more story-related content. So far though so good!

I well know at this point that you love Dark Souls! Looking forward to it!

I plan on replaying Infinite sometime on the 1999 mode but I will likely wait a year or two. It's a really long game and I was satisfied with what I got.

Good buys all around. I'd like to get Lunar for the PSP, though I haven't worked through the other games I have for it yet lol

Yep, same problem with me. It was always one of those games I would get to when I work through other games.

As far as Bioshock's ending is concerned, I was half expecting it.  They leave little hints all over the place.

They definitely leaves hints everywhere. I hadn't figured out the ending till it happened though. It was a good twist but I certainly think it could have been presented better.

Hope to get Dark Souls soon and Bioshock Infinite after I beat the first Bioshock and probably the second game. Lunar look pretty interesting too.

Heard of the Fate saga, but I haven't seen any of the two animes nor played the games. As far as I know, but animes are adaptations of visual novels of the same name, although I don't know if the game you mentioned is a visual novel or an RPG.

Halochief90

Haha, looks like you got lots of playing to do before you get to those games!

Well, Fate/Zero is a prequel to the Fate/Stay Night visual novel. The Fate/Zero anime was adapted from a series of light novels however. I recommend starting with Fate/Zero as it stands on its own pretty well. The Fate/Stay Night anime is pretty average though, I hear the visual novel is way better. Finally, Fate/Extra is an RPG that was made by the same guys that made the original Fate/Stay Night.

Dark Souls. I don't know where my copy of the game is. It upsets me considering its one of my favorite games. You should have got it day one! That game deserves all the world's money!

Halochief90

06/20/2013 at 06:09 PM

Haha, well I had just played Demon's Souls a few months before it was released so I felt it was better to wait. The game made plenty and plenty more money though so it doesn't bother me that I got it for cheap.

Dark Souls, I bought it was well. Not really feeling the controls though.

Halochief90

There were problems with the controls in Demon's Souls as well. I learned to love them though!

Played Lunar Silver Star Harmony on a rental and really liked it. Finished it in 25 hours. It wasn't at all difficult. That's my only complaint. A little too easy. Perhaps there are settings to make it harder though. I have to pick it up and play it again for sure.

Halochief90

06/21/2013 at 05:34 PM

Yeah, it's really easy. It's not too bad though, as it certainly beats the alternative of spending hours on one boss on what is already a game that is quite long.

I held off on the purchase of the PSP version of Lunar for a long time, too.  I originally had the premium edition preordered, but I cancelled it shortly after playing the demo.  There was something sluggish about the battle system, and some of its quirks were somewhat annoying.  I more or less walked away from the game until I decided to look at it again.  From what I read, the qualms I had with the game eventually disappear as the party grows stronger, and I ended up buying it last year.  It was incredibly inexpensive, too, which made the decision to buy it easier.

Halochief90

06/24/2013 at 07:34 AM

Not noticing anything sluggish about the battle system, but I haven't played it that long either. My main gripe so far is that you can't switch to the original graphics. That should be given for all game remakes.

Temperance

06/25/2013 at 04:49 PM

My comment about the game's speed is highly subjective.  For the games I'm used to playing, which are mostly action-oriented rpgs, I might be somewhat sensitive to watching battle animations that I wish I could skip.  So, take my opinion with a huge grain of salt.

Also, I agree with you about the original graphics.  Actually, they should have done it one better and included either the PS1 remake or the Sega CD original (or both Tongue Out!).

Halochief90

06/26/2013 at 02:25 AM

I can see what you mean by the unskippable battle animations. It is incredibly annoying to be up against a large group of enemies and have to wait for each of them to finish the same long-winded attack.

Looking at screenshots of the original, I get feelings of nostalgia and I didn't even play it! Maybe their was an issue with fitting the original graphics on the UMD, but I am not really a fan of the new style anyway. It looks like it was farmed out to a team that had little familiarity to the original game.

Temperance

That's what happens with remakes Tongue Out!  I mean, the character portraits are fine in Silver Star Harmony because they offer the least amount of discrepancy from the originals.  But, the character sprites were completely redrawn for a new audience (to mixed results).  In fact, this is the third time they've been redrawn!

As for where the old graphics would fit in, they would have been terribly out of place amongst the redrawn backgrounds (which is why the inclusion of the older games would have been nice).  They were also incredibly tiny and would have needed to be resized to fit within the higher resolution.

At this point we can only hope for better options for the inevitable fifth release of Lunar Undecided.

Halochief90

06/27/2013 at 01:27 AM

The character portraits are definitely nice. Something tells me they were done by completely different people than whoever redid the backgrounds and sprites.

It is really weird that they would create so many remakes for a game that already looked great to begin with. Lunar has become pretty infamous for its non-stop remakes and rereleases, but I think the only way for a definitive version is just to bundle all the games in one copy!

I may have to grab that Front Mission game, especially after my copy of 3 mysteriously disappeared, along with about 18 or so other games. Really wanted Bioshock Infinite, too, but that will have to wait a while, disposable income is going to become a thing of the past here, soon.

Halochief90

06/27/2013 at 01:29 AM

Wow that sucks! I wonder how 20 of your games managed to vanish like that. If you do get Front Mission, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Surprisingly, the game still has a fair amount of strategy despite being completely different from the other games.
