Growing Away From Fighting Games

The first game I ever played was Street Fighter II Turbo on Super NES.

I was 4, and it was a revelation to me. I loved cartoons and anime; being able to direct the characters in battle put me into the action in a way I'd never imagined. Since then, fighters have taken top priority for me. I've played tons of them in the past 2 decades, and in every generation they've been the deciding factor for the console I've bought.

Except the coming gen, at least.

Infamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadowfall and Final Fantasy XV are the next gen games I'm interested in. Killer Instinct looks cool, but I'm not getting a Xone just to play that. As for the current gen, I've been putting a lot of time into Soul Sacrifice, Sonic Generations and Muramasa Rebirth, while my collection of fighters on PC and the Vita collect dust.

Fighting games are brutal and unforgiving to learn at a high level. Unlike FPS games, the skills you learn don't carry over that well from one fighting game to another. Each has it's own intricacies, mechanics, and balance issues that have to be dealt with. Then there's the fact that I don't know anyone who plays fighting games as much as I do, and playing online doesn't do much for me. Assuming that the game in question HAS good netcode to begin with.

I've been focused on single player games I can go through at my own pace. Stuff that doesn't require learning 1-frame link combos or mastery of spacing to play decently. I was never that good at fighters to begin with, and I've lost interest in re-learning how to play each of these fighters to get the most out of them. I've been getting a lot more out of watching top players in tournament streams than playing the games myself lately.

But who knows? Maybe a new fighter will come out that will change my mind. As it stands, though, I've never been as uninterested in playing them as I am now.

Are there any genres that you used to love that you aren't as into now? Let me know in the comments.

Funny you should mention it but I too have a love/hate (or hot/cold) relationship with fighting games. I remember liking Mortal Kombat for its' story line but shelved in shortly after beating it. Blazblue & Streetfighter 4? I simply got tired of buying what I thought was the most current version only for a new edition to come out later. Persona 4 Arena? Great fighting game with many of my favorite characters but I almost wish it had been a co-op beat em up or a continuation of the rpg it's based on instead. (Well, it is a continuation story wise. What I meant was I rather it be an rpg expansion sort of thing.) King Of Fighters 13 reminded me of awesome fighters akin to Garou Mark Of The Wolves and SF 3rd Strike so it's one of my favorites. (And even then I don't play it as often as I should) Soul Calibur 4 & Tekken 6 likewise gave me a lot for my money but they've been collecting dust all the same.

The amount of variety within the genre is a double edged sword for me. On the one hand, it keeps things fresh and interesting, but it also makes it a lot harder to get the most out of multiple different games.

For me, I've always been better at 3D games but like 2D games more. FML. XD

Me and fighting games are a funny thing first off i only like playing them with other people mainly freinds that come over, i dont play online to many cheaters and alot of online players are very vocal and i cant stand listening to someone wine cause they lost or rant cause they won, but with the exception of Persona 4 Arena which i play cause i like the story. With that said i will stick to my srpgs, jrpgs and sims lol!!!

Oh, God, I HATE when people do that online. It's either noxious bullshit like that, or the rather empty experience of playing it with just game audio. The latter feels like you're just playing against really advanced AI...until they send you a nasty message telling you to get a life. Ugh.

I actually like more modern fighting games over some of the early ones.  But I find most fighters really hard anyway, because I stink at them.  So the ones I like the best are ones that are frendly to beginners, like Soul Calibur and Smash Bros., etc.

Hardcore FG players tend to overrate the old fighters WAY too much. They'll constantly harp on the new fighters' problems while glossing over the glaring imbalances and bugs that the classics bring. The prescription on their nostalgia glasses is super strong.

I don't have a problem with people liking the older fighters. It's just when they use it as an excuse to be elitist fuckwits that pisses me off. They do the same thing with Smash Bros.; many people don't even consider it to be a real fighting game at all. SMH.

Smash Bros. is just a different kind of fighter.  HAL just took the formula and turned it on its ear.

I'm always nuts about fighters but I feel your pain. It's such a demanding genre at times. I largely don't play Street Fighter 4 anymore because I'm not up to snuff even though it used to be my go to game competively.

Oh, yeah, I stopped playing SFIV a while ago. I tried out version 2012 for a bit just to see how Cammy changed, and then I never touched it again. I'm not all that excited about the next revision either.

Well, I have played enough fighting games to know the basic and I quite like the genre, but i'm not too fan of it, since I don't own many and its always a chore (IMO) remembering the combos and getting a hang on the mechanics. But, I don't mind to buy them and I still enjoy to play them. And even if it's not a "traditional" fighting game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is one of my favorite games.

I hate what a bad rap Smash Bros. gets from fans of other fighters. Hell, a lot of diehard Smash players don't even like Brawl. I thought it was a ton of fun when I played it, though.

Well, Brawl is still a popular game and its well liked, but much of the hate you mentioned comes from die hard Melee (and the original N64 game) fans thinking it got "dumbed down for dirty casuals".

Also, I can understand the complaints of die-hard fighting fans, since the game is not a "traditional" fighter. However, that doesn't mean that it means the game sucks. Its just that its not their thing and even they can try the game and find out that they can enjoy it. Unfortunately, some won't realize that.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with fighters. Love when I play them and I'm doing well, hate when my ass gets kicked by a button masher, and in my opinion, unless we're talking tourney level, button mashing really does seem to work well in most fighters at the arcade.

I've seen little girls wail on self-described champions of Tekken, Soul Calibur, etc., and end their win-streak by mashing away at them.

They are fun in that immediate gratification way, though, so I still like them, and I'm excited for the new Guilty Gear. Hell, the only arcade game I played very long at Screwattack GAMING Convention was Street Fighter III, and that arcade was full.

I'm actually really interested in seeing how GGXrd and KI turn out. But for me, I'm just not as into them as I would've been, say, 5-10 years back.

I love SFIII, too, even if I suck badly at it. :p

Fighting games use to be my favorite too.  Now-a-days, I don't care for them too much.  I still enjoy playing the old fighting games though.

Which ones in particular?

I still enjoying playing, Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 3, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Fatal Fury Special, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Mark of the Wolves, King of Fighters '96, Project Justice, Mortal Kombat 2, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Capcom vs SNK 2.  These are the games that come to mind.  I actually playing most of these this year. Laughing

I think that I don't play them as much as I used to because I don't know anyone who plays them. Online is hit or miss and playing single player gets old quick. Back when arcades still existed that was when I lived for fighters. Street Fighter Alpha, Samurai Showdown 3, King of the Fighter 96, X-men vs Streetfighter, Tekken 3, Soul Edge, ect. I still enjoy them just not as much as I would like to.

God, I LOVED playing in arcades back in the day. It was so much fun. I loved the environment and the competition, and the games almost always looked and ran better than their console counterparts.

I miss those days sometimes.

I wish they would make a comeback here in the states. Even though this was ten years ago I was pleasantly suprised to see arcades still flouishing in Canada. As far as I know they are still popular in Japan. My brother has actually found a few decent ones in Houston. I have not found a single one here in New Orleans. Yeah fighters were much better in an arcade setting.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you when it comes to fighting games. I fell in love with them back in the 90's when SNK was belting out different variants of fighting games. though capcom did sour me to the genre with their ever re-releasing of prior games and the on disc dlc annoyance.

Right now I'm trying to finish gathering all the collections of past fighting games before I get into something new. Though I have been curous about Blaze Blue

I know exactly what you're going through.  When it comes to fighting games, I went through the same exact period.  I haven't recovered from it, either.  With no local access to competition and no desire to put up with online bouts (and sore losers), I don't think I'll ever return to the genre.  It's a shame really, because I had a lengthy history with fighting games.

As for your question, I recently had a huge falling out with turn-based (and realtime) rpgs.  It's one of the few genres that I understand too well, and I no longer enjoy the gameplay it provides.  Actually, now that I think about it, this is my second falling out with the genre.  I have a feeling I'll be parting ways with it for good this time.  As to the fine details why I'm moving away from these games, well, I'm not going to discuss that here.  My reasons will definitely upset somebody, so I'll stick to the old phrase and say nothing at all.
