Last week we looked at six great boss themes from video games. This week we're going to look at six final boss themes, y'know, the epic last boss battle at the end of the game! The moment you've been anticipating and dreading during the whole game! Final boss themes should be exciting and epic. Now let me point out that I'm skipping the really famous ones that everyone knows (such as FF6's Dancing Mad, FF7's One Winged Angel, and Super Mario 64's Ultimate Bowser). These are fantastic final boss themes, but I'm going to give you six of my favorites, perhaps some of which you have never heard. I hope you like them, and please let us all know what your favorite final boss themes are too

Marx's Theme from Kirby Super Star/Composed by Jun Ishikawa and Dan Miyakawa

KSS has a great soundtrack. The final boss, Marx, is this weird alien thing that resembles a clown. He's freaky. While battling him in space, an exciting final boss theme plays which captures adventure, suspense, and tension. The second half of the song has that Kirby feel to it as the trumpets come in with some hopeful progression. What a great theme for a great final boss to a great game!

Bowser's Rage from Paper Mario/Composed by Yuka Tsujiyoko and Taishi Senda

Paper Mario is one of the best Mario RPGs, and back in the day, Bowser was still a foe to fear. This final boss theme opens up with an ominous organ, moving to an exciting beat that features a sitar and electric guitar. This song evokes tons of tension and fear. It's a very perfect fit to a battle in which Bowser has the power of the stars at his command.

A Toccata into Blood Soaked Darkness from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness/ Composed by Michiru Yamane and Yuka Watanabe

This song also opens up with an ominous organ, but then changes into a fast tempo with a driving beat. The strings keep things moving and voices in the background accent the tension of the situation. This theme feels very Castlevania-like, which is perfect. The song guarantees that the battle will never get boring or repetitive. I've never played this game, however, so I don't know if this last battle is as exciting as the music which accompanies it.

Last Battle from Grandia 2/Composed by Noriyuki Iwadare

I love Iwadare, and you can hear why in this song. This song is just insane! It is super pumped as the instruments just blare out the theme. I believe Iwadare uses real instruments too, which is why everything sounds so good. This one is not ominous or creepy, just plan awesome. It's just fun to listen to.

World Revolution from Chrono Trigger/ Composed by Yasonuri Mitsuda

You've probably heard this one; if not, you're in for a treat. This masterfully crafted final boss theme plays as Crono and the team fight Lavos, one of the greatest villains in video gaming. The theme is exciting, heroic, suspenseful, and poweful. The main theme and Lavos' theme can both be heard within this song, which is executed very well. It's one of the best, and no surprise, Mitsuda is one of the best VG composers ever. Oh, and the game is great too.

To the Last Battle from Xenoblade/Composed by ACE+

This theme is filled with a hopeful sense of adventure. It's beautifully orchestrated and delivered with a sense of urgency. It's very exciting, then slows down to bring some calmness, but then it picks up again with that theme of adventure. It gives off this feel like "the world depends on us." Killer theme for a final boss.

Again, I knew 4 out of 6!

It's been a while though since I've played that particular Castlevania game. I happened to like it a lot myself, but oddly I don't remember much else about it, only the fact that I liked it, lol

I don't know if the game is any good or not, but the soundtrack is great. It's a 3D Castlevania game, so it's probably not that great of a game, but I could be wrong.

"A Toccata into Blood Soaked Darkness"

brilliant music, brilliant title.

Absolutely. As with all Castlevania music, this soundtrack is brilliant, as you said.

Well, I'm not overly fond of Lords of Shadow's "I want to be a movie score" soundtrack Undecided

Cool songs. I'd forgotten how ominous that Paper Mario song is. It's been a long time since Bowser was scary! As for Grandia 2, I'd be willing to bet that the guitars and drums are real but the other instruments are synthesized. The brass certainly is, though it is pretty good. Definitely an awesome song though.

As for a favorite of my own, I'm gonna share a normal boss theme because I missed last week's post you did lol. This is "The Edge of Green" from Radiant Historia, a superb RPG on DS. Composed by Yoko Shimomura.

I love that soundtrack! The quality of instrumentation is incredible, and the songs are crafted masterfully. Yoko Shimomura is one of the best.

I have already fallen in love with xenoblade's start menu music.  I am worried that they same thing will happen to the final boss music, which would not necessarilly be a bad thing, but I have not started the game yet.

I haven't played the game, but I know it's amazing. It was composed by Yasonuri Mitsuda, Yoko Shimomura, and several others. Very good stuff!

Nice picks! That song from Xenoblade is awesome! I wish I could play that game, but sadly don't have a Wii. This is a bit old school, and the quality isn't the best, but here's one of mine.

Wow, that was pretty intense for an NES theme! Good one. There's tons of great boss and final boss themes, and the NES has some of the best ones.

I have a soft spot for the Final boss themes from both Baten Kaitos games. The first one had a very high energy, but awesome theme

now Baten Kaitos Origins had a much different, more soft, and slow paced final boss but it was a beautiful song. One of my favorites in the game, though its odd for a final boss. It works in a strange way though...

Great themes! Motoi Sakaraba composed for those games, I believe; he's great. That first one was indeed very intenses, and the origins one did not sound like a final boss theme at all, but wow, it was beautiful! Thanks for sharing, JD.

Not really a final boss theme, but I'll be typical and say I really like Wily 1-1 from Mega Man 2.

A true classic indeed. Some time I'll have to do Villain themes, there are some really cool ones.
