Latest Nintendo Rumors

My source inside Nintendo--can't even give a hint as to what department he/she is in for fear or reprisal--has given me some valuable info about Nintendo's plans. In the wake of their dismal forecasts for the year, they've gone all out to address longstanding issues that have been holding them back.

Here we go:

- Nintendo's next handheld is going to be a phone co-developed with Samsung called the Galaxy N. It will be an ARM-based device based around a customized version of Android aimed at kids, running more powerful specs than the Vita's. The N's detachable control pad will come with dual analog sticks and shoulder buttons, along with a share button allowing kids to share gameplay footage on a kid-friendly "Nintendo World" website being built around the N.

The N will cost $699 unlocked, and $199 through an exclusive 2-year contract with Verizon. It will come bundled with several Virtual Console games, alongside new free-to-play titles developed exclusively for the N.

- Nintendo is going to abandon the WiiU in 2015. X, Bayonetta 2 and the new Zelda game will be moved to their next console; Smash U will be the last first party title to come out for it.

- Nintendo started working on their next console, called Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System, in early 2013, as soon as the WiiU started tanking. A powerhouse system designed based on feedback from developers, the UNES will feature 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, a customized i7 processor from Intel, and a graphics chip from Nvidia more powerful than the PS4's based on the new "Maxwell" architecture. Those cancelled titles that were supposed to be on the WiiU? They'll be launch titles for the UNES.

The UNES will launch in the holiday season of 2015, for $499.

- Nintendo has hired J Allard to do a complete overhaul of their network functionality. The first phase of this will be the addition of cross-buy and VC games that work across the 3DS and WiiU, which will be announced later this year. The removal of region-locking will come in Winter.

- The next proper Zelda title will be a gritty, bloody M-rated adventure game meant to be a "Skyrim-killer". This is part of a broader initiative by Nintendo to shed their "kiddy image", and go after the core gamer in a big way after losing them with the Wii and WiiU. Most of their more family friendly fare will end up on the Galaxy N mobile device.

- The next Metroid FPS will be developed not by Retro Studios, but by Bungie, who is set to start preliminary work on a series reboot once Destiny is released. It will be available in the first year of the UNES's life cycle, with a similar "persistent world" design centered around co-op multiplayer.

- Smash Brothers will be getting a complete overhaul. The game will be redesigned from the ground up as a more traditional fighting game, which will be co-developed with Capcom. Expect several guest appearances from Street Fighter and the like.

- Speaking of Capcom, Nintendo plans to buy the rights to Mega Man and develop new entries for both the UNES and the Galaxy N. The former will likely be a subscription-based MMO, while the latter is a free-to-play platformer supported by in app purchases of upgrades and weapons.

That's all I have for now. I'll let you know if my source digs up anything else.

Holly cow! Podcast Unlocked this week was saying how cool would it be if Bungie developed the next Metroid. Something must've been in the air.

Wired's Game/Life podcast was also talking about how badly Nintendo is doing the sales race. Looks like their playing catchup in a big way.

I was just thinking of how my neice and nephew were playing phone and tablet games instead of 3DS and Vita. I guess that's true generally and Nintendo noticed. Remember when PSPGo was also a phone? Why'd Sony dump that?

Finally, I want a Wii-U the second there's a price drop. I feel one in the air right now.

I had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st today. :D

Most of it doesn't ring true for me, particularly the M rated Zelda. I think that would actually kill the franchise. I just can't picture Link in torn clothes with a 3 day beard hoisting a key above his head while the usual music plays. Throw in a whole bunch of QTEs and we have Link, Temple Raider. Bloody, Gritty and Zelda just don't belong in the same sentence.

Sony already tried the phone thing and failed. Plus the fact that the 3DS is selling well with over 42 million.

I guess stranger things have happened but I'll wait until I hear it from Nintendo.

Wow...it'll be interesting to see how things develope from here.  If they really are bring out a new console in a couple years, I'm kinda glad I didn't spring for a Wii U just yet.

I was on board until M-rated Zelda (and the $700 phone was a big red flag), but if they're actually doing those things ... ???? Why? Everything else sounded cool, though, aside from UNES, which I think is a bad name. They should really re-consider that "Revolution" thing.

Just to clarify: I'm calling BS, too, but some of these things wouldn't surprise me.

These are just so outside of the realm of what Nintendo would ever do, it was immediately obvious that Gigantor was fabricating the list for the lulz.

High powered specs aren't really a Nintendo thing, and putting a plan in motion to bail on the Wii U after a year on the market wouldn't make much sense.

A Nintendo phone also seems unlikely because of how incredibly fussy they are over user experience, especially when it comes to control. It would also encroach on their 3DS marketshare, which seems like an inherent risk. Furthermore, they consider themselves a toy company, not an electronics shop (perhaps part of their problem), so a custom-made phone seems like a long shot, particularly on Android.

Nintendo is also staunchly Japanese and has recently seized control of their North American branch, by putting Iwata above Reggie officially, so it's extremely unlikely that they'd hire someone like J Allard and start taking tips from a westerner.

Like you said, gritty Zelda isn't going to happen. Twilight Princess is as dark as Nintendo is likely willing to take that series and that had some pretty mixed reception.

Smash Bros. becoming a more "series" fighter is just... no, that's definitely happening. And purchasing Mega Man from Capcom then making F2P games and MMOs with him is definitely the cherry on top. I mean, that's basically Capcom's mascot, so they're not going to do that, and then jumping into two genres of games that Nintendo already opposes with their new acquisition is even more ridiculous.

Hopefully my response wasn't taken too seriously. I just thought it was a good moment to share one of my favorite quotes from Super Troopers, especially given how incredulous I thought these rumors were.

Didn't buy the bail part either, but I could see them coming to reason and trying to have a newer gen-ish system in the near future, given WiiU's sales. The Gamecube wasn't that far behind XBOX in horsepower, really. I thought. Maybe. I'm basing that on hearsay and too tired to look up specs.

The phone's pricetag was too outrageous to be true, I thought it was a typo, and the whole thing sounded like a stupid idea, but ... Virtual Boy.

I don't actually know who J Allard is.

Agreed on Zelda, plus that Warriors crossover shows them already taking it as mature as it's going to get, in my opinion (in addition to TP ...tee hee).

Yeah, this came after the Zelda thing, and really buried the April Fool's before April Fool's joke, so I agree again.

I forgot that line until right meow.

I think it seems plausible the phone (even if the 3DS is fine as it is) and the UNES, though I don't want the Wii U to dissapear so early. As for the others, I don't bite them AT ALL. Then again, these are all rumors. We won't know anything untill we have a confirmation.

"The next Metroid FPS will be developed not by Retro Studios, but by Bungie"

That's the only thing that made me think "GO FUCK YOURSELF!" (nothing against you Gigantor) because we all know how immersive the Halo games were.

A bit early for April Fools, don't you think?

I'm so tired that after I read the M-rated Zelda thing, I checked the date. lol

Its about time Nintendo pulls their head out. This is why I like to wait and see what happens. Nintendos won't stand for getting beat at their own game.(pun intended) The console war was DOD and pretty stale, but this changes everything.

I know this was silly yet oddly I read up somewhere that someone found out Nintendo's specs on their next console. I didn't read up on it but after reading this I can't but help to reconsider now.
