Next-Gen Tomb Raider, 60FPS, And The "PC Master Race" Cult

So we saw some interesting developments surrounding the next-gen port of Tomb Raider yesterday.

The Definitive Edition has been rightfully criticized from the beginning for a lack of value. The version coming to PS4 and 360 will come with some extra content--multiplayer DLC, costumes, a digital art book and comic--but no changes or additions to the single player (the core of the experience) or any extra tombs to explore. What's more, the game is largely being sold on it's cosmetics, with things like Lara's face and hair getting top billing in SE's promotional efforts. All of this makes the $60 price tag rather ridiculous, IMO.

However, despite agreeing with the general skepticism over Crystal Dynamic's first next-gen entry, there's one pervasive line of attack that has gotten on my nerves.

See, I played the game on PC, which was the first to get the new TressFX tech that made Lara's hair more realistic. That effect is a massive drain on my system, keeping it from running at a consistent frame rate. Hell, people with PCs FAR more powerful than mine have the same issue. Yet I still thoroughly enjoyed the game, frame drops and all. In fact, it's one of my favorite games of the entire generation.

So if people with $1000 PCs can't get a smooth 60fps, surely it wouldn't be an issue if the console versions didn't either right? Wrong. When it was initially announced that both versions of the Definitive Edition would run at 30fps, people dogpiled on that talking point as yet more proof that the game wasn't worth buying. This despite several people stating that 60fps can't even be acheived consistently on high end gaming rigs.

Then, yesterday, the executive producer of the game mentioned during a stream on GamesRadar that the Definitive Edition would run at 60fps on PS4, saying that he was misquoted on the 30fps issue. This was coupled with an off-the-record quote reported on various websites corroborating his latest statement. Thus the people who had kept up their idiotic "30fps" attack line were caught flatfooted, with those still willing to even talk about it being reduced to making excuses (30fps isn't a big deal anyway, I want official confirmation, etc.).

This speaks to a much more pervasive issue surrounding the issue of PC vs. console--the whole "PC master race" concept, where PC owners are constantly seen throwing their weight around to make themselves look important. I've always hated the notion that allegiance to products from faceless corporations somehow gives people a sense of pride and arrogance. It doesn't matter to me whether it's the big 3 console makers or PC part manufacturers. And I say that as someone pushed to PC because I got sick of the technical issues on last gen consoles.

People enjoying games on the PS3 or 360 doesn't bother me. My decision to move to PC was a personal choice; I see no reason to evangelize the movement and try to win converts, or to preen and gloat because the games look better. Plus there are still several legitimate issues with PC that shut people out; the cost of upgrading (assuming you even have a PC you can upgrade to begin with), being shut out of console exclusive titles, lack of used games, resales and borrowing, and the fact that working on PCs is far more complicated than simply buying a console.

Even with a gaming PC, I still want to get a PS4 somewhere down the line. I'm excited about stuff like The Order and Infamous Second Son. And having a PC and console together would allow the two to compliment each other with their own unique libraries.

This notion that anyone deserve a medal for having a gaming rig is nonsense.

gaming PC's are good.  I want one.

What kind of PC do you have now? Just curious.

I have a laptop with a Nvidia 525M card in it.  It can handle older games and most indie games, but I can't really play DayZ or new games.  I'm going to get one eventually, just have other priorities now.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind joining the PC  Master Race, but the barriers of entry are a little bit too high right now.  I like the thought of having access to a plethora of games that extend back through through the 90s and such.

Indeed, backwards compatibility is one of the biggest advantages PC has.

I was a giant asshole of a Gamecube fanboy when I was 11, but I get you. I'm currently playing last gen games on Steam on my laptop, cause I figured out I can and owned/own no last gen systems, but I'm with you on wanting a PS4. NSonic79 has a point about there being more IT knowledge required for running games on PC, and arguably more potential tech issues.

I've had all types of random problems with certain PC games that have never come up on any console I've played, and the means of fixing them has been complicated (to say the least). Too many PC owners tend to minimize how complicated it can get.

If I could just find the time, I want to fix up my old towers to play WarCraft II again.

60 FPS hair. Awesome. I want that.

What kind of specs do your systems have? Just curious.

I haven't looked at them closely in a while, but the old one is from 2000 and the newer one from 2004. So whatever was common in those years. Neither were super gaming rigs in their time, just decent. I've gotten all my computers from Dell since 2000. I hear a lot of complaints, but I've had really good luck with them. I switched to laptops around 2006 or 7.

I played TR on a PC that was $700 4-5 years ago, 60fps, no TressFX. It looked fine, significantly better than the console versions. And from what I've seen of the Definitive version, the Lara model looks aesthetically worse, like a department store mannequin with a bad wig. But since most people don't understand aesthetics or artistic rendering, they think it's an improvement because they see individual strands of hair and unquestioningly believe that more (insignificant) detail equals better visuals.

What I'm saying is that people judge and complain about issues and ideas they don't understand. Another example is the 6v6 announcement for Titanfall. Rush to judgment based on status quo and comparison to games that aren't Titanfall, no consideration for what design dictates. It's not PC vs. console, its experienced and knowledgable enthusiasts vs. noobs who don't know shit. Consoles, because of their mass market nature and ease of use (even though that is going bye-bye), just happen to be bought by a lot of newbs.

Seriously. I don't get all the crying about the 6v6 issue; as a fighting game fan, I've had lots of fun with 1v1 games for decades now. If the gameplay is good enough then it won't be a problem.

Yeah, I never cared nor understood the notion of a "superior" console and though GamingRigs are interesting, it makes you look like an asshole when you start presuming that it is better than any other thing.

Like you said, both consoles and PCs have pros and cons.

Speaking of PC problem, even if i'm loving Steam, I sadly can't currently play Borderlands due to a problem with a missing key that doesn't let the game run and even other people on the forums are having the same problem. Damm you Gearbox.

I'm having an issue with Metro 2033 and Metal Gear Rising that keeps me from playing them at 1080p. I can't even start Metro because I can't change the resolution without starting the game first; thankfully MGR starts at 720p so I can still play it (love that game).

To pretend PC is better across the board is foolish.

Nicely written. I like the simplicity of shoving a disc or cartridge into a console and being able to (theoretically) run with it, but I started out as a PC gamer back in the days of 5.25" floppies, DOS, and monochrome monitors. I'm trying not to clutter up my laptop with games so that I can use the space for my photos and creative writing. I don't always manage to do that, though.

LOL floppies and DOS games. That was...interesting back in the early-mid 90's when I was little. Really glad PC gaming has gotten more user-friendly, LOL.

Try the mid 80s, lol.

That whole "controversy" about the PS4 edition running at an average of 60fps and the Xbox One running at an average of 30fps is pretty ridiculous. Is it even that noticable? Don't know if you visited other sites to read what everyone is saying, lol.

Oh, I was glued to NeoGAF and other forums yesterday, don't worry. :p

I never did think PC games, by and large, looked appreciably better than console games myself. I have a Steam account but I mainly use it for stuff like Ys and the upcoming Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky games. Most of the games I enjoy playing are only on consoles, and for cross-platform titles, I find it's easier to just buy the game on PS3 or PS4. I only buy laptops nowadays in any case and am thinking of dumping Windows for Apple when my current computer bites the dust, so you can see that gaming is not a priority for me when it comes to buying a PC.

And honestly, I don't see much improvement for games on PCs. For me, artistry counts far more than pixels and framerates. 60 FPS is nice, but as long as the game isn't a slideshow or isn't a cheeseball mobile game that looks like it was drawn by someone who flunked out of his third grade art class, I'm good.

In the 90s and early 2000s there was a significant difference in visual quality between PC exclusives and console games. Not so much now because of the insane costs of developing a game that would make full use of the hardware. The days of having to upgrade a PC for a new Ultima or FPS release are long gone. Star Citizen is the only game on the horizon that looks to capitalize on the capabilities of high end machines (Pillars of Eternity is shaping up to be the finest looking isometric game in years, but that hardly requires a lot of power). I'm fine with that, I mostly play indies, old classics, and mid budget strategy games on PC.  Papers Please! was one of the best games I played this year, and it looks like something from the Amiga days.

I did see some of the games of that era, like Unreal and Quake. On a technical level, they looked whizzy. On an artistic level, they didn't click with me, but I freely admit to personal bias in that respect. Regardless, they didn't entice me to invest money in upgrading my computer to handle them.

Economics are probably the biggest restraint in gaming these days. I suppose that's always been true, but even back in the late 90s-early 2000s it was still easy enough for even mid-level developers to do well. It's why so many game developers are retreating to the mobile ghetto, because it's dirt-cheap to make games there. Even there, it's tough to make a living unless you create the latest swipe-and-tap IAP-driven fad game.

I looked at Papers Please! after I read your comment. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. That game looks interesting. For my part, one game I do want to pick up on Steam other than Legend of Heroes is Tesla Effect, which is the latest Tex Murphy adventure game. Tex creators Chris Jones and Aaron Conner bought the Tex Murphy license back from Take-Two, which was the last owner of Access/Indie Built before they shut it down, got a successful Kickstarter, and a deal with Atlus to publish it through Steam. So that's on my to-buy list. I've also thought about downloading the Leisure Suit Larry remake, just for chuckles.

But it's a sexier Lara on a sexier new system at a sexier new price? That does not compell you to drop the cash? Even if the console versions sound like will run better des;pite teh efforts of PC's?

...

Yeah I don't buy it either. I'll stick with my copy thank you.

PC gaming sounds interesting but the negatives you mentioned are the reasons why I chose console gaming. No fuss, no muss. Just sit down and game. I like that.
