In recent years I find myself playing with the volume fairly low, so I have missed out on a lot of music in the past generation of gaming. I do have plenty of fond memories and love a fair chunk of music from the SNES era. I can close my eyes and hear nearly every song from Super Metroid, as well as Yearnings of the Wind from Chrono Trigger. I will have to come back and look at The OneUps more later.
Return to The BaDlands #7 - Some of My Favorite Gaming Music

Over the 20+ years (!) I've been playing games, I've heard some absolutely incredible music. Whether it's a big title from a big publisher, an indie developed fan game, or unofficial remixes, great music sticks with you and can elevate the gaming experience in a way that few other aspects of the production can.
Here are some of my favorites:
- Tekken Tag Tournament 2
I absolutely love the music in the Tekken series. Narrowing it down to just one OST was difficult; Tekken 3 and both Tekken Tag spinoffs in particular are amazing. I went with TTT2 because it has amazing remixes of my favorite songs throughout the series, along with a series of awesome new tracks as well.
- Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha (PS1)
Street Fighter EX was, by all accounts, a decent but rather forgettable entry in the SF pantheon. A spin off made to ride the wave of 3D fighters released during the 90's, it played solidly enough but didn't hook me in the way the 2D entries did. Except, of course, when it came to the soundtrack; the PS1 version of the game has the best music in the entire series, easily.
- Sonic: After The Sequel (PC)
The Sonic series has always had banging music since the Genesis days. But my favorite soundtrack is actually in an unofficial sequel to Sonic 2, set between that and Sonic 3. The soundtrack (which you can and should download for free officially) is not just one of the best soundtracks ever, but one of my all time favorite albums. It spans four discs and all of them are loaded with amazing tracks. You HAVE to listen to it.
The One-Ups
Like many of the video game remixes I've heard and fell in love with, I stumbled on this Arkansas-based cover band completely by accident. I liked Volume 1, but it was Volume 2 in which they really refined their sound and went from great to incredible. Looking through my music for this post reminds me of just how far behind I am in catching up with the rest of their work; shame on me for that.
Retro Remix Revue
The moment I heard their take on Guile's Theme, I knew these guys were special. It's a damn shame that they split up before we could get a Volume 3, as their take on the games they did cover in Vol.1 and 2 was incredible.
