What I've Been Playing (Flash Sale)

Anyone with a PS3 and a few dollars in their account probably took advantage of the awesome 99-cents-a-game Flash Sale. I bought seven games in total, which combined is still less than the price of one of them. This has led to me going on a gaming-binge, a rarity for me. This is mostly due the fact I usually don’t play so many games at once. I’ve already finished three of them! Here’s my impressions:

Retro City Rampage

This game pays homage to countless classic games. Not just in dialogue but in self-contained gameplay segments. So many that I don’t think I can keep track of them all. Oddly enough, my favorite segments were probably the racing sections which don’t seem to reference any specific old-school game. My least favorite was the NES Metal Gear stealth segments. Not a huge surprise as I was never a fan of the original Metal Gear. Most of them are a mixed bag (underwater Mario levels) or can be a little repetitive (Smash TV levels), but overall it all worked well together and never overstayed its welcome.

Super Stardust HD

Not much I can say about this one. It’s a twin-stick shooter and it’s while one of the better ones, I got tired of this overused game-type years ago. I finished it in a few hours and had no problem removing it from my hard drive. Still worth a dollar though!

Echochrome ii

Again, not much to say about this one because I couldn’t get passed the title screen without a PS Move. This is why you got to be careful when it comes to impulse purchasing… which would make me feel ashamed if it wasn’t only a dollar! Regardless, if I ever get the chance to borrow a Move, I will take it to play this game.

Tokyo Jungle

This is easily my favorite of the bunch so far. This is also my first rogue-like. I have always been curious about the genre, but it’s quite obscure over here. So much so that I usually forget about them before I ever get to buying one! As a roguelike, having to repeat the game from scratch is not nearly as frustrating as I thought it would be. Not to mention, the variety in the game keeps me from feeling I’m doing the same thing all the time. I’ll be sure to check out more of those roguelikes I was interested in now.

Retro/Grade

This wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought it would be a simple bullet-hell shooter, but instead it’s a rhythm-based game which involves going backwards in time? Anyway, it seemed too odd at first, but after I got the hang of things it became pretty addicting… that is until a few hours later and I got tired of the same stages and music being repeated over and over. It was worth the ride though, and I’ll say I’ve had my fill of rhythm games for a while.

Gotham City Imposters

I’m kind of relieved this is a multiplayer-only title. This allows me to keep my backlog to a minimum while I buy all these games. Haven’t gotten to this one yet, but I will shortly.

Tales of Monkey Island Episodes

I’m glad I never bought this one at the full price a few years ago when I played the original Monkey Islands. Because it likely would still be sitting on my hard drive unplayed after Escape from Monkey Island burned me out on the series. Once I’m done with my other games, I will give this one a go.

damn you made out like a bandit.  I played a little of Tokyo Jungle when it came out but it wasn't my cup of tea.  Weird, inventive game though.

Tokyo Jungle is definitely not for everyone. They should have released a demo on release so more people could try it to see if it's their thing. I would have bought it.

Gotham City Imposters was my favourite non-Halo multiplayer game.  I think that I put roughly 15 hours into the game and came away satisfied.

That sounds interesting considering Halo is one of the few multiplayer games I play. It's also good to know the community will probably have a huge boost thanks to this sale.

I heard Tokyo Jungle is just nuts. I was tempted by that one. Also, the Monkey Island bundle was also very tempting. I kind of want to play that on 360 for achievements though.

It is nuts. You should have jumped on it for a dollar. Granted, the game does try to bait you with DLC, so at least you dodged that bullet.

I played the first two Monkey Island games on 360, so it would make sense for me to own Tales there. However, my 360 has barely been turned on in the last year, so I just get everything for PS3 by default.

I'm pretty sure Tales of Monkey Island isn't available on 360. I could be wrong, though.

Oo. You're right. Tales is only available on WiiWare and PSN. For some reason I thought this was a bundle of the first two games already out on XBLA.

I just now saw that Retro City Rampage was only 99c on Steam, ending yesterday at 10am PST. Dammit.

It would have been worth it. Though it seems to be a trend that once a game gets its price slashed like this, it will later appear in other sales or in Humble Bundles.

I bought 6 games from the sale.  Retro City Rampage, Tokyo Jungle, Braid, Back to the Future, Tales of Monkey Island, and Sam & Max.  I hadn't played any of them yet.  I don't know when I'll get to them.

I know all too well how many games you have to play. Granted, all of these except Tokyo Jungle are quite short. So it shouldn't take too much effort when you get to them.

I picked up three games in the sale: Tokyo Jungle, Retro/Grade, and Tales of Monkey Island. I'm most excited to try Tokyo jungle Smile

Hey, I got all of those games. Great minds think alike!

Retro City Rampage was also 99 (Euro) cents on Steam, so I didn't resist and decided to buy that together with Thomas Was Alone, which was also on sale.

I'm kind of interested in Thomas Was Alone. I wish that was on sale on PSN (as I don't really game on my laptop).

I grabbed some games from that sale, too. Back to the Future, Tales of Monkey Island, and Sam and Max.

LOL, yeah I saw that in your last blog!

Heck yeah that was an awesome sale. I picked up a couple of games that were playable on the Vita as well. The only one that isn't I think is Jurassic Park.

That is pretty cool that it gives you both versions. I don't own a Vita yet, but when I do it will certainly be nice that I will have a handful of games to play on it.
