If done right, a song can really be enhanced with good lyrics from a good voice

I love video game music, but to be honest, I don't really like singing in games. Too often songs with lyrics in games are just bad. However, there are some really good ones, and that's what this blog is all about. When I thought about it, a few awesome songs popped into my mind that have great lyrics. Let me point out that these are songs originally created to be in a game, so songs from games like Rock Band don't count. By no means am I an expert in this field, so if I missed some good ones, please share below. But without further ado, here are six VG songs that have great lyrics.

Eyes on Me from Final Fantasy VIII (composed by Nobuo Uematsu, sung by Faye Wong)

Some think this song is awful. While a little cheesy, I think it's great. C'mon, people, it's a love song, it's gonna be a little cheesy. Sung by Chinese singer Faye Wong, Eyes on Me plays at the very end of FF8; it's a romantic piece for Squall and Ronoa. Apparently the song was released in Japan as a CD single and sold better than any VG song previous. It's a heartwarming song for sure, and the perfect ending to a game all about love.

Melodies of Life from Final Fantasy IX (composed by Nobuo Uematsu, sung by Emiko Shiratori)

FF9 is an amazing game, and the music only helps it to be such. The main theme for the game is Melodies of Life, a tremendously beautiful theme! But to hear the song performed by a real orchestra with awesome lyrics to boot is pure greatness. Japanese singer Emiko Shiratori actually sung the English lyrics, and she did a great job. This one is soothing and touching, also being the perfect song for a great ending.

Live and Learn from Sonic Adventure 2 (composed by Crush 40)

Crush 40 is a band which Jun Senoue, the Sonic composer, started for the 3D Sonic games. While some of their songs are iffy, this one stands out as an instant classic. It's dramatic, exciting, and has a fast beat that fits perfectly with speed. This song is a huge fan favorite, and many think of Live and Learn when they think of Sonic music. The music is great, but the lyrics really help in pushing this one over the edge.

Still Alive from Portal (composed by Jonathan Coulton, sung by Ellen McLain)

Easily one of the most amazing songs with lyrics in video games, Still Alive is far different from any song you've heard. Sung by GLaDOS (Ellen McLain) at the end of the game to assure you she's alive, the song focuses on plenty of humorous things, especially cake. Just listening to it brings a smile to my face. And if you need a smile too, just take a listen and be glad you're still alive.

Frog Hop from Rhythm Heaven (composed by TSUNKU and Mitsuo Terada)

Rhythm Heaven for DS has a lot of great songs, most of them without lyrics. But out of all the ones with lyrics, this one really sticks out to me. The style and voice remind me of Elvis, which is definitely the point since the frog sings about rock n' roll. It's a happy groovy song. I'm not sure who sings it, but he does a great job. Who knew that frogs could sing and dance so well?

Beyond the Sky from Xenoblade Chronicles (composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, sung by Sarah Lim)

It's another ending theme song. But this one exceeds the FF ones, in my opinion. The soundtrack for Xenoblade is amazing! Out of all those great songs, this is the only one composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, and it is spectacular! Not only is the music inspirational, but the singing is also top-notch. The entire thing builds to a grand climax that is hard to beat. Grand, sweeping, beautiful, and gripping, this is one of the best VG songs with lyrics. It just shows you how amazing Mitsuda is.

Please forgive me, as I'd like to contribute to this blog, but I'm too lazy to post YouTube links.  You can do a search for any of mine if you are interested.

I think the first time I heard lyrics in a game song was the intro to ClayFighter. :)

I'm glad you put Melodies of Life from FF9 on here.  I also like the ending theme from Chocobo Racing.

The Portal ending song is great.  I also like the one in the sequel, "Want You Gone."

There was a song in Rhythm Heaven Fever on Wii that had lyrics I liked, but I can't remember which one it was!  I know that's not helpful.

And don't forget Wahoo Stomp (Stepping Wind) from Klonoa 2.  Sure it may be gibberish, but it sure is catchy.

And speaking of gibberish, there is a song near the beginning of Tales of Legendia called "The Bird Chirps, I Sing," that has lyrics consisting of a made up language for the game.  Go Shiina is genius.

And I'm kind of sad you didn't put any songs from Katamari Damacy games on here.  I like a lot of those songs.

Wow, thanks for all that, Cary. I'll have to check these out. I didn't want to include gibberish lyrics since they're not real words, although the made up language one from Legendia is pretty neat.

I remember another game that had great song lyrics: Sam & Max: Season 1 from TellTale.  I especially liked the "Ted E. Bear" and "War" songs.

And if you want to hear an old game with really BAD lyrics, look up SNK's Psycho Soldier.  Heh heh heh.

You've got some things to look up now, mister!  Better get on it! :)

I used to rock out to that Clayfighter song on SNES. I didn't really know video games could have spoken dialogue untill I played Super Metroid, and heard that narrator say: "The last metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace." That kinda blew my mind at the time lol. The only song I can think of like this is the intro to Tenchu on PS1. That game is really dated, but I still have a soft spot for the atmosphere, japanese music, and horrible voice acting. Cool

Cool. That opening must have been amazing back in the day. I did choose to only include songs with English lyrics, but Japanese lyrics are good too.
