My Beef with Zelda II

Posted on 04/26/2013 at 04:41 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I thought more people held distain for the this game... I wonder how many of the Zelda II apoligists played the game during the NES era... it seems that most people I have talked to have scars from childhood that still ache when the Zelda II overworld theme starts playing. I must say that the first half of the game is pretty damn good, and it's not until the last three palaces that all of the flaws and uneven design really start to bleed the fun out of the game.

The difference was that Mario 64 is near perfectly designed, and implemented new ideas seamlessly... Zelda II did not.

They are completely excellent. He just started Metroid for NES, so that should be stellar.

The Best Ninja Gaiden Game You've Never Played

I think you may be thinking of one of the excellent Genesis Shinobi games

Replay Hell: Final Fantasy XIII (Yes, I'm going there)

I really liked Final Fantasy XIII, and I think the whole arguement of linearity is completely bogus.

Look at 4, 6, 7, 8! You get virtually zero freedom in those games! They are linear as hell! Sure, they dress it up by providing an over-world screen with some deserts and forests; but it is still point A to point B with very little freedom until post game (which 13 provides in spades). They only difference between 6 and 13 is that in 13 you literally walk down corridors from place to place, and in 6 you walk across continents from place to place. The illusion of freedom is still not freedom.

And as far the long opening, how long is it in 7 before your get your (illusion of) freedom? a dozen hours? more? What about 12? 16 hours? I think that 13 does have some problems, but the battle system is the best in ther series since the ATB gauge was introduced and the game was pretty difficult towards the final chapters (for a change). I think most people pick on 13 because its chic to do so, and they pick on the game without making any real critical analysis. You can't just say a game is 'stoopid cuz you don't like it'... you have to use critical thought and subjective reasoning to do so, and until you are able to do that hating on a game for the sake of hating on it is a pointless endevour.

Sonic the (8-bit) Hedgehog

I am very thankful I started hoarding my favourite games before the prices really exploded... the Super Nintendo is an expensive habit nowadays.

There is actually a version of Sonic 2 on the SMS that we never got also. it is a really good game, though not quite as good as Sonic 1. The best thing about most of these SMS games we never got is that they are really common in Europe, and therefore relatively cheap to import.

I am so stoked on the PS3 version with X-2 included... This release, coupled with Windwaker HD is pretty much just like heaven for me.

New Super Mario Bros. can expose the kind of person you are, deep down inside. It exposes all your greedy, self-preservationist tendencies and bares them to your fellow players. On the flip side, it can highlight your level of patience, cooperation and understanding. The fact that I am able to play NSMB Wii (and Wii U) with my wife and we work together symbiotically and compensate for each-others quirks and short comings actually says a lot about the strength of our relationship.
