Hands On With Super Smash Bros. Brawl+

And you thought mods for Wii games weren't possible.

If it wasn't totally obvious, this is a mod for the hardcore Smash Bros. enthusiasts only. Most players will be more than satisfied with the offering found in the original game, regardless of the perceived issues from members of the community.

While the term may be somewhat pretentious, this was clearly created to be a competition mod. It caters to a fan base who enjoys simpler levels, a lack of items, and a more finely-tuned roster.

I encourage everyone to at least try the mod if you have the ability. The Brawl+ page has a fantastic installer application that will automatically place all of the mod files in all of the proper places on a fresh SD card, making the mod highly accessible.

Though Sakurai and company created a fantastic game, Brawl+ has really dug down into the details and made sure that the game is balanced on all fronts. This allows players to enjoy a more diverse set of characters because not a single one feels as if they can't compete; a feeling that I didn't have after extensive play time with the original game.

In closing, I would like to thank the team behind Brawl+ for their fantastic work. They have helped breath new life into a game I had long forgotten in favor of its predecessor.

What's this? A balanced/fun version of Brawl?!?! I know what I'll be playing this weekend.

Does the mod do anything with the net code, like improve it?

To my knowledge, no changes have been made to improve the online play. That's not to say there won't ever be, but I'm guessing it's unlikely as Brawl+ online players can not partake in a match with non-Brawl+ players (according to the site).

Gonna give this a shot! New SD cards are really cheap right now, and the new E3 announcements have me excited. Since the original Brawl was designed to be more accessable and casual than Melee, I can't really fault them for that. Plus, the wait for the new title is going to be hard to wait for. This might keep me occupied until then.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Review

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an entry in the Metroid Prime series - 18 years, in fact. It was 8 years ago that Metroid Prime 4 was originally announced and its development was more than a little turbulent. Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
