Game of the Year 2011 - Console Awards

Find out what games of 2011 best represented the current consoles on the market.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - Winner

After the critical success that was Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, high expectations were placed on the latest from Naughty Dog. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception rose to the occasion, providing an experience that stands toe to toe with its predecessor and head and shoulders above the competition on the platform.

Reprising the role of Nathan Drake, players set out on another quest with a ragtag crew, which includes Sully, Chloe, Elena, and newcomer Cutter. Along the way, players will go from the pubs and streets of London, to Nate and Sully's past, to a ship graveyard, a sinking oceanliner, and the heart of the desert. The smorgasbord of set pieces provide a rich, adventure-driven experience that never loses sight of the goal.

While a more directed experience than most, its unique blend of cinematography, puzzle solving, gunplay, and platforming makes Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception the best game on the PlayStation 3 this year.

Infamous 2 - Runner Up

Looking back at the major releases of 2011, one can’t help but be reminded of 2009, as many of these huge titles are sequels to the best and brightest of two years ago. This is in no way a bad thing, however, as 2009 was a wonderful year for gaming. Sucker Punch proves just that with the follow-up to their hugely successful 2009 release. Infamous 2 reminds us why the first game came from the shadows to become one of the best open world action games of this generation, and ups the ante in many key areas.

Infamous 2 is all about setting. The festive, colorful city of New Marais is a much more interesting and fun place to explore than the drab, gray ruins of Empire City from the first game. Sucker Punch tells a compelling story with interesting, human characters this time around, even making series protagonist Cole McGrath someone worth cheering for. McGrath has tons of new and wickedly fun powers to unleash, with his upper-tier abilities laying waste to huge swathes of real estate. Even if you’re playing a good guy, you can’t help but test out the limits of wanton destruction at your fingertips at any given time. While the game stumbles a bit at times, infamous 2 does enough things with enough panache that it is most deserving of its place on our top PS3 games of 2011.

Wow. I completely agree with this one. That never happens with these things. Great job.

Also, and I think I've mentioned this before, I want to play Bastion on the 3DS very, very badly. I might take Jason up on his suggestion and email the devs about that.

Nice to see Outland mentioned. I loved that game. I need to play more handheld games. Only played Okamiden so far from this year on handhelds. I am still working on finishing it too.
