3DS Circle Pad Attachment Detailed

While it didn't make an appearance at last night's conference, Nintendo did officially reveal and detail it on their website.

It was expected that Nintendo would detail the new 3DS Circle Pad Attachment peripheral during their press conference last night. It was also speculated that the peripheral would be something Monster Hunter specific, designed and created by Capcom. Neither held true when Nintendo revealed the peripheral after the conference online last night. Retailing at ¥1,500, the peripheral will be an officially supported add-on and will be available later this year on December 10, alongside the release of Monster Hunter 3 G, which will include support for the peripheral.

Like the system itself, the peripheral will require its own battery to run; however, it will not include an integrated battery. Instead, one AAA battery will power the device and Nintendo will be including one in the package to get players going.

Being that the peripheral is an official Nintendo peripheral, it has already started to receive support from other upcoming games. Resident Evil Revelations, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble, Dynasty Warriors VS, and Kingdom Hearts 3D will all feature support for the second circle pad.

While we reported earlier that the second circle pad seemed to be smaller than the one on the 3DS, official artwork seems to indicate that both circle pads are identical in size. Nintendo has still yet to reveal a system redesign, as hinted by 01.net, but the official and third party support of this peripheral does seem to indicate that an eventual redesign is inevitable.

Well this was the news I was waiting for. It's an official peripheral and its already got some pretty strong support. Redesign is undoubtedly on the way.

Nintendo can blame the investors all they want, but they ultimately control the product and should've just pushed it out for a late 2011 release if that's when it would've been ready. Next to the Virtual Boy, this must be the most blundered Nintendo product launch ever.

A AAA battery... someone needs to go to Nintendo HQ and start upending all tea tables.

That AAA will probably last a long time. What is it exactly powering? Just three triggers and a IR sensor.

I looked at some screenshots of it, and it actually looks pretty comfortable. It also reminds me of the WiiU controller. I have to have it in my hands before I make an opinion on it.

Kid Gloves: When Hand Holding Goes Too Far

As I was moving into the end game of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, I was tasked with finding three power couplings to unlock a door. It was a simple enough job, but in a game that had been almost entirely a linear affair, I was glad to have the rails taken off if even for a small section. It turned out that this wasn’t the case; any time I got remotely close to one of the power couplings Doktor would chime in on my codec to inform me that I was near my objective. Frowning, I destroyed the coupling and repeated the task with Doktor telling me exactly where to go and what to do. It made me realize just how much game design has changed in recent years, and what needs to be done to combat the need for constant hand holding that game designers have developed.
