Bizarre "Disc Read Error" for the 360 Modern Warfare 3

Even exchanging the game may not help.

Modern Warfare 3 has hit stores in force, dominating the market beyond even the most generous expectations. Selling over 9 million copies in one week alone, Activision’s cash cow shows no signs of needing to be put out to pasture. That’s not to say that the game’s launch hasn’t had its share of snafus, however; besides some people trying to get their hands on the game in some dubious ways and Call of Duty Elite not working quite right yet, you can add a bizarre disc read error on the 360 to the list of issues surrounding this huge launch.

Similar to the strange save file glitch for Batman: Arkham City, this is an Xbox 360-only problem that has people scratching their heads. Reading the thread on the official Xbox forums shows a large number of people having seemingly random problems with their copies of MW3. In some cases, the game plays for a few minutes before showing an error that says “Unable to read disc." Still others have had the game not even show up in the disc tray. In some cases the game may work on some Xboxes and not others.  No solution has been found so far, though some customers have had luck exchanging their game. However, for the majority of players with this issue, switching out the game two and even three times hasn’t solved the problem.

That’s on the console side. Though there have not been any major issues reported for the PC version as of this writing, the PC gamers may be out of luck when it comes to using Call of Duty Elite. A rather ominous-sounding post on the official Call of Duty Elite Twitter account stated that “We are working towards a universal Elite experience but we cannot guarantee if or when a version will be available for PC.” In regards to the ongoing stability issues with the CoD Elite service, you can check the official site for updates on its status.

I got MW3 on launch day, but I didn't actually pop it into my 360 until just before writing this story. I didn't experience any errors, either in the single player campaign or in the multiplayer match that I suffered through. I do it for you, the readers.
