Nintendo 3DS Revealed

The new handheld system will feature a 3D experience and will be on display at E3.

Yesterday, Nintendo issued a press release in Japan announcing their next handheld system, tentatively titled, the Nintendo 3DS. The system's hook will be its 3D display which does not require glasses.

The system will be backwards compatible with both DS and DSi cartridges. While not explicitly stated, this must mean that the system features 2 cameras similar to the DSi, as a number of DSi exclusive games take use of the system's cameras.

Currently, Nintendo is slating the system for release in their next fiscal year which ends next March. Those eager for more information will have to wait for E3 as the system will be on display at the trade show.

3D handheld? Without glasses? It must be the future.

Speaking of being in the future, I wonder if Epcot will include some of these in their "Innoventions" attraction. Ever since the Dreamcast was released, they've included some of the current generation's consoles, and I don't see why they wouldn't include a handheld where true 3D games are fairly commonplace.

If not Epcot, maybe The Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland might have a display?

Me and Jason have deduced that the 3D found here is probably something similar to Johnny Lee's Wii projects that are POV based. The system probably has a motion sensor in it, and tilting the system gives player a look behind objects in the 3D world. I'd be extremely surprised if it was actually some sort of stereoscopic-like 3D.

While I agree with Nick's deduction, I'm not the Jason that was present at the time. I'd posit that this type of 3D is the least likely to cause sickness, and if I had to describe the instances I've seen that utilize it, I'd say it's closer to looking into a box that has depth in the opposite position of the viewer, rather than the 3D you might see in movie, where things pop out at you.

So, is this like holograms?

One thing I'd like to see is Battle Chess, or something close to it on this system. Simple for sure, but I'm easily amused like that sometimes =)

I wouldn't say it's like holograms. We'll probably do a special in the future, complete with youtube links, so you'll be able to get an idea of what we're thinking. You can probably google Johnny Lee and Wii to find the example Nick mentioned, too.
