Rayman 3D Preview

I'm so excited, finally, a brand new Rayman game!

Just kidding. Rayman 3D is yet another rerelease of Rayman 2, the most popular and best received Rayman title in the series. While originally released on the N64 and PC, this latest 3DS version of the game is based on what's considered the best version, the Dreamcast edition. In preparation for this latest rerelease, Ubisoft has made some enhancements to the game to entice new and old players alike.

Of course, the game has been transformed to fully support the auto-stereoscopic 3D offered by the 3DS' top screen. The 3DS slider pad will provide players with adequate analog control, as opposed to the cruder directional pad control afforded by the DS rerelease last generation. As with almost any game made in three dimensions, the 3D effect of the 3DS will afford players better control and more accurate traversal through the world, as depth and distance are far more evident.

According to a Ubisoft press release, this edition will feature major gameplay updates that improve accessibility, progression, and the learning curve. Based on the wording, it wasn't clear if this was due to the 3D effect or if actual updates have been made to the core gaming experience.

Outside of the seemingly minor upgrades, players will once again be able to accompany Rayman on his quest to save his friend Globox and defeat the evil pirate, Admiral Razorbeard. In order to accomplish this task, Rayman must do battle with a variety of enemies, traverse an array of landscapes, and utilize numerous means of transportation.

Puzzle solving, platforming, and even flight are required to bypass the various impediments in the game. Minor collection quests also make an appearance, via rescuing the Lums. Like the original 2D Rayman title, Rayman 3D is split into a variety of levels, all of which are mostly linear, though some do offer wider landscapes to explore.

While Rayman 3D isn't coming with too much extra in tow, it will still offer the award-winning gameplay that has held up over the years. The 3D effect will surely improve this experience, particularly during the times where Rayman is flying with his ears. Players can grab the title alongside their 3DS on March 27, for $39.99.

For a brief second you made me believe it was a new Rayman game. They do have that new sidescrolling Rayman game still in development, but it's too much to ask of Ubisoft to make a 3DS version.

I would be getting this but I still have an unopened copy of the N64 version I've been meaning to try out.

I've no doubt this will be better than the old DS one thanks to the slider pad.
