We're Back Up

Sorry for the downtime, everyone.

Hey everyone, you probably noticed at some point today that PixlBit was down. We've been having some serious lightning storms out here in Tampa, which subsequently knocked our power out and messed up the server's network connection. Everything has been resolved and hopefully we shouldn't be having any more problems. My apologies for the outage, but now that we're back, be sure to check out our ongoing Metroid 25th Anniversary coverage from JD; also, be sure to read Matt McLennan's KIrby's Adventure Review Rewind!

Outland Review

This metroidvania game puts an extremely compelling spin on the tried-and-true formula.

Metroidvania games are unquestionably some of my favorites. While there aren’t too many produced outside of the titles from where the subgenre name is lifted, they are often a treat when they become available. Rush'N Attack: Ex-Patriot Review

Maybe making a sequel to an obscure game from the '80s wasn’t a great idea?

Rush’N Attack: Ex Patriot is the latest in a string of updates/sequels of old Arcade/NES games, some of which have been phenomenal, like Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Unfortunately for Konami, that same success isn’t manifesting in their sequel to Rush’N Attack. This is thanks in large part to some uninspired levels, finicky jump mechanics, and one-dimensional gameplay. The gameplay does occasionally give off a Metroid vibe, but it’s clear the developers didn’t know how to really capitalize on that concept, resulting in a ho-hum experience.

April Fools '11 - Review Rewind: Metroid 64

Mother, TIME TO GOOO rake the leaves.

I picked this one up at a used game store for only $29 and it was better than I remembered! After 3 Metroid games they had to go in a new direction, especially with 3d and rumble packs taking off so fast. How did we survive without cell phones? I don't know. What I do know is that the game (which you just lost) took a three-pronged approach to action, adventure, and shooting.
