Folklore for PS3

Folklore is a game that was developed by Game Republic and released for the PS3 in 2007. It centers on a young university student named Ellen. Another playabable character is a journalist named Keats. It takes place in the seaside Irish village of Doolin. You will also venture into the Netherworld. The story is pretty complicated,so I'm just going to focus more on the combat and controls here. That is one interesting aspect to me. The Sixaxis controls are used in the combat parts very well. Combat in the Netherworld makes use of "folk",which are creatures and spirits which, upon defeat, can be absorbed by your character to use in battle. Sixaxis controls are used for shaking and yanking the energy out of folk for you to absorb.

Ellen can cloak herself using folk powers. Keats uses more direct, brute force attacks and the more powerful[offensive]folk to his advantage.

The graphics are colorful and dreamlike. I found them rather stunning. Facial animations are really done well. That helps in games for me to connect with characters. Makes it easy. The music is wonderful. A 3 disk soundtrack was released for it called "Folksoul:The Lost Folklore"

Overall it is a pretty enjoyable game to play. Did not get a whole lot of attention here in the US. I think it did better in Japan for some reason. It was originally titled "Unknown Realms".

I have been watching the new show Hannibal, which comes on Thursday nights on NBC. I've seen all the Hannibal films and Silence Of The Lambs. Read the book Red Dragon, too. So I was a little skeptical that they could pull off a TV show which captured the feel of those properties. I was pleasantly surprised by the first episode last week. And last night was even better!

Mads Mikkelsen plays Hannibal, and he is both scary and creepy. But at the same time you almost like the guy. He is so direct and never hesitates to say what he thinks about anyone. It's interesting the way they are playing this out. Lecter is consulted by the FBI for his help on murder cases. Little do they know who they are dealing with and why he's such an expert.

Hugh Dancy plays Will Graham. Such a brilliant but conflicted man. He is an expert profiler and former cop. His mind allows him to make leaps that others cannot. But he finds that getting inside the minds of killers is hazardous to his own sanity. The interaction between Will and Hannibal is exactly what makes the show fascinating to watch. Lawrence Fishburne is also fantastic,he plays Will's boss at the FBI.

I start a one week vacation here in 3 hours! Wish I could tell you I was going somewhere exotic. But we are going to Indianapolis to see my brother,sister-in-law,and Mom. Any time away from work is cool with me. But I am looking forward to the trip and seeing the folks. I may do a few blogs after we get there on Tuesday. We are leaving that morning. So I will be able to get some stuff done and relax this weekend in preparation. I always try to cram as much enjoyment as I can into these breaks. You have to spend time with the people you love and have some fun.

"Hey Wayde....we are gonna do some gaming, right? You said we would."

What I'm listening to today.......getting ready!

I recently got it for 10 bucks at Vintage Stock. Pretty decent game if you like magical stuff and fairies....or is it faeries. Not sure on that!

Folklore sounds interesting. I've only watched Silence of the Lambs in high school, in a film class.

"Holiday Road," so THAT'S the song I hear in all those TV ads. lol Actually a pretty good song, all I've ever heard before was the vocal harmonizing in the chorus, which is the part played on TV.

I never realized it was Lindsey Buckingham that did the song. For some reason I was thinking Kenny Loggins,as he did tons of theme songs in that era.

I only know Footloose and Top Gun themes, but based on those, that man's a genius. lol

As for Buckingham, Fleetwood Mac is a great band, but I wonder how it feels to be placed 100th on a list of 100 best guitar players... there are a lot of things I don't agree with Rolling Stone on.

That has to suck. Buckingham is such an underrated guitarist. You have to see him live to truly grasp it. He's incredibly good on both acoustic and electric.

LOL, I thought it was Loggins too.

I bought Folklore years ago in a bargin bin.  I only paid $5 for it.  I didn't know what it was about or if it was any good.  I still hadn't played the game.  I kind of forgot I owned it until now. Laughing

Hey,don't feel bad. I owned it for quite some time before I started it. Glad I did finally.

I bought Folklore when it first came out. From what I've played it's quite unique and interesting. I have yet to finish it. The fact that it relies on jerking the PS3 controller around can get somewhat irritating. It is worth playing and maybe someday I'll get back to it.

I'm an incredibly lazy gamer. I don't like having to shake things about to do stuff onscreen. But I don't mind so much in this game for some odd reason.

Never heard of Folklore, but that girl in the game has a cool hat.

It does look rather English to me. I enjoyed the Irish setting they used in the game.

I remember there was a contest way back when where they asked people to design their own folk and the winner's folk would appear in the game or something like that. And that's all I remember about it, and I'd even forgotten about the game until you just brought it up.

I tend to grab obscure titles for my newer systems when I find them. Theory is I will discover a hidden gem. But often I end up with a hand full of magic beans!

My wife played Folklore last year (on my recommendation, 'natch) and really liked it, though she never did finish it. I haven't played it yet but I'd like to. Definitely does that dreamy fairy world thing very well. And I'm confident that the only reason the sixaxis controls are prominent in combat is because Sony published the game and in 2007 when this came out Sony was still defending their choice of sixaxis over rumble. That same thinking killed Lair and Factor 5, unfortunately. I'm glad Folklore still turned out so well.

I remember the disaster that was Lair. It had such promise. Don't know why they could not resist the Sixaxis control scheme.

My friend gave me this as a parting gift in college, however, I haven't gotten past the intro, because I played games with trophies... I'm such a whore.

Nothing wrong with that! I whore myself for achievements regularly....to no avail. My pimp is gonna be soooooo pissed at me!

I liked that accoustic Gibson Flying-V guitar in that Scorpions video. Leave it to the rockers to do something like that. LOL

I played the demo for Folklore when it came out but only just recently bought it. i'm glad to hear people like it. I'm going to play more of it some day.

That guitar is pretty unique. Never seen anyone but Schenker with one before. Folklore is a great PS3 exclusive title that everyone should try out once.

I've never even heard of Folklore before.

Of course, I suppose it would've helped if I wouldn't have waited until 2012 to get my PS3, which is 5 years after the game came out

Folklore? Why do I know that name? Maybe I read about ti before, but didn't recall until now. Either way, looks intriguing. Maybe I should see if there's a copy out there somewhere.

I remember being excited for Folklore because it dealt a bit with what seemed to be Celtic mythology. (Aka, the fey) Then I found out it was a PS3 exclusive. Frown
