Games ramble, TV ramble... whatever ramble you want it to be.

Aw man let’s get this out the way, fighting games are hard! Yup Injustice has been kicking my ass these past few weeks. I’m not saying the game is unfriendly to non-fighting fans because it’s not. The game is actually very accessible and I’ve gotten through the story mode and a few of the battle modes (Arcade Mode), without any issue. This is very much a case of easy to learn, difficult to master. I’ve won one, yes that’s right, one solitary win online out of a possible 30! I know that says more about me than the actual game. In fairness I’ve not given the game enough time to train myself the different combos and/or strengths and weaknesses of various characters. The game is really fun though and for local multiplayer with friends, the game is class. I may try getting myself better at the game, or it may just end up on my pile of discarded fighting games never to be returned to. As I paid full whack for it, I’m going to try force myself to the former.

After having not played it since purchasing it, a few months ago (maybe more), I thought I’s give Fallout: New Vegas a spin. It’s pretty great. I loved Fallout 3, when it came out and I’m not entirely sure why I didn’t pick this up on release. It’s kept me up till 5am so far, which is always a good, yet dangerous sign that the game is hitting the right notes. So I’ll definitely carry on ploughing through that. The games backlog is growing and I really can’t see it getting any smaller. It’s really quite daunting!

I’ve been giving my laptop some more love recently as well. This has manifested itself mainly in the form of Path of Exile. I’ve been really enjoying it. Dare I say it, I prefer it to Torchlight II! The game runs a bit slow in the town hubs but I expected some kind of slowdown. My laptop is not really designed for games but it does alright with various strategy games and the odd MMO. I now have the urge to build a gaming PC, to fill that void, in my gaming life. Luckily I don’t have the funds to bankrupt myself!

I recently sat down to watch Defiance, the new SyFy show linked with the recently released MMO. Whilst I have no desire to really play the game, the show was actually ok! I mean I can’t say I’d really recommend it but for my own personal enjoyment it did the job, my guilty pleasure, if you will. It’s kind of like Firefly but without the space exploration and ‘Whedonisms’ that made that show so good. Defiance needs to focus less on the CGI sequences, which it’s pretty weak at, and focus more on characterisation. All the characters, bar a few, seem to all be archetypes and unoriginal.

In other TV that I’ve been watching Game of Thrones continues to be class, this season is fast surpassing anything the first two managed to achieve. Bold statement, I know! Community continues to be good, which is a massive relief. Post Dan Harmon isn’t the nightmare everyone assumed it would be.

I’ve most definitely missed out some games that I’ve played but like I said, my backlog is ridiculous at the moment. So I’m now off to decrease it! Until next time.

I want to play Injustice but can't really afford it with so many other games out. I like fighting games, but I'm not really good at them, and always get my ass handed to me online. Still, I do enjoy them.

Oh sweet, I'll make sure I accept! Yeah it's rare I pay full price for a game let alone a fighting game. This was a rare purchase for me!

Whenever shows are cgi heavy I always think "Hmmm, this is going to get prematurely cancelled!" As such, I was surprised Eureka lasted as long as it did. Every episode had pretty heavy digitally created special effects.

I also agree it's easier for shows to save money and keep an audience invested with good characterization. It's not all about eye-candy. For example, Final Fantasy has always looked beautiful but not every FF had good characters and a good story-line. (Yes, I used a game to compare TV shows. My credibility is shot!)

As for fighting games, I have fun with them but I'm not obsessive compulsive enough to try mastering them. lol. (Okay, maybe during the arcade days I was a tad more devoted)

I'm going to allow that comparism. If you look at reviews for TV shows, games and even movies, a lot of the criteria used to grade the product is actually very similar. Story telling and characterisation have become a big part of our medium, long gone are the days when gamers will accept shit archetypes for characters.

I actually wish I grew up in an arcade centric era, there's something quite nostalgic and warming about that whole era in gaming and I missed it!

Reminds me, I've never seen Firefly. Should probably get to that, considering everyone is amazed by it, it seems. Also, Game of Thrones, but I don't have HBO. Maybe I'll read the books. That's a damn lie.

Not one to condone piracy but just download Game of Thrones dude, HBO aren't going to miss your money and the guys making the show aren't starving artists... it's weak but that's how I condone it, in my head. Firefly is a sweet show, definitely check it out. It's actually aged pretty well as well, which is rare for any sci-fi show over ten years old.
