This week has been insane at work. Feels like all I've done is work and sleep since Sunday. But I wanted to tell you about something from the weekend. It takes a lot to get me out in this heat on a day off,especially when I could be gaming or seeing a good movie instead. But Tokyo In Tulsa is just a really cool event that seems to get better each year. They do it at the convention center and it pretty much takes up every area in the place. Great artwork,shopping,gaming,music,and some awesome cosplay going on.
They have a theme each year,which is kinda cool. This year it was "bounty hunters vs. zombies" so there were plenty of people dressed up as such. You see all sorts of great costumes and they are often game related ones. Once I saw a guy dressed as Pyramid Head from Silent Hill. This guy was huge and he pulled it off rather well. Costume was absolutely incredible,too..
The shopping is kind of hit or miss. A lot of the stuff I pass on because it's so overpriced. If it's something I know I can get online much cheaper,why would I bother? They have a little something for everyone. Steampunk clothing,manga,anime,posters,action figures,you name it.
Some of the stuff for sale just makes me wonder what the hell it is. Some folks are so into Japanese culture it blows my mind. My son had a friend like that who listened to a lot of J-Pop and was into some very odd anime and even hentai. Hey,who am I to judge....I'm just as nerdy when it comes to game stuff. That's what I look for when I go,but it's hard to find except on the first day before all the vendors get picked clean.
Every now and then they get a decent band to come. One year they had Freezepop,who were pretty good. Mostly it's just strange DJ's that play all sorts of trippy J-Pop...not my thing at all. This year they had a band named Destrose,which is an all-girl metal band from Tokyo. It was their very first show in the US and they came all the way to Tulsa for it. They were certainly dressed for the event as you can see here. Not so sure I'd call them metal,but they can play. They were a welcome addition to the festivities this year. I put a video of them playing live down below in case you are curious. Along with a Japanese band that is definitely metal...Loudness!

Yeah, cons are fun, but the stuff is overpriced.
The bands at SGC were my favorite part. Looks like you got a pretty good band there. Don't know that I'd call them metal either, but they very vaguely remind me of some of the songs used at the start and close of FMA episodes, so they are fine with me.
Glad to know you got to go somewhere cool like this. I do like to lounge and watch movies, but it's good to get out.
It was a fun outing,but it makes me feel like the oldest man on earth. I only met a few people close to my age. Not like when we go to the gun show,then I feel young!
I went to Tokyo in Tulsa on Saturday. I played some games, looked at all the cosplayers, attended a couple of panels, and I picked up a stuffed moogle and the second season of Ah! My Goddess from the vendor area. The DVDs were actually pretty decently priced and I got a 20% discount.
I have found some deals on DVD's before. I bought the complete Witchblade series on Blu-Ray for 50 bucks and I liked that.
Why can't my area have something like this!!?!?!?!? makes me feel bad I didn't go to the local con last fall. Will have to make the effort.
Every once in a while we get a cool event here that isn't gun or fish related. Gotta go out and support them when they happen.
Izumicon is held in Oklahoma City (well, Midwest City) every November. The OU Animation Society also used to hold Ronincon every year at Dale Hall on the OU campus in Norman, but I think that disbanded a few years ago.
