The Death Of Console Gaming? I think not.......

Just wanted to do a short blog here to start off with. I'll have to brush up on my HTML skills so I can add visuals to future blogs. But I wanted to weigh in on a subject that has been on my mind lately. Some game journalists and industry types have made a bold prediction. That this next generation of consoles may be the last. That we are headed for a future of digital downloads. No actual physical disk to enshrine on your shelves anymore,no sir. Too costly and time consuming to produce games on disks and ship them worldwide. Considering we have two new consoles just on the horizon it seems far fetched too many that this will be our future. But I do know that Sony wants it to be. Don't know about Microsoft, but they seem to be moving us in that direction.

Here's how I feel about it. I love my consoles and my games in cases. I love the books that come inside of them. I love the artwork and books with artwork from those games. No,I am not a hoarder. i swear to you,I just like my stuff. All digital game collections do not seem feasible to me. It would make me feel too vulnerable. That someone could somehow hack into my account and then wipe me out! Perhaps Sony has safeguards in mind to prevent that? Don't forget how PSN got hacked.....twice! Real people lost real money in that fiasco. Do we really want people stealing our game content? I sure as hell don't. Technology advances whether we like it or not. Sometimes it's a good thing with positive outcome for all. Other times it enrages consumers to the point where they switch brands altogether. Fortunately the tipping point is a way off at the moment. While I embrace digital download titles, nothing can replace the experience of unwrapping a new game and cracking the case open. And knowing that your game will reside safely upon your shelf. Would love to know how you feel on this subject.

I have a love/hate relationship with digital download. I love that I can get hard to find classics and quality games not otherwise available, but I hate the impermanence of the whole thing.

Oh, and you can do pretty much everything we used to have to code ourselves with the blogging tool bar.

I'm the same way, I don't trust DL unless it's something free or that I wouldn't be so upset about losing (like my $5 Sonic CD on my Android), but I prefer physical stuff.

But think about it: CDs and DVDs are still around, and those physical mediums still sell, often well, even today, and in music's case, vinyl has made somewhat of a comeback in the market.

I think physical mediums are safe, and will be alongside downloads. At least, that's how I see it, and what I hope for.

Also, like Tami said, I don't think you'll need to learn/re-learn HTML to add the stuff you're talking about. lol

Wayde is from the good old days on 1up when we had to code everything ourselves to spiff up our blogs. Did I mention he was my first 1up friend?

No, but that's cool and something I did not know. I believe my first friend was lindalou.

Keep in mind I was also blogging on 1up in those early days  (I joined just three years after it was launched, in June 2006... there's that number again lol), and even still had dial-up, hence my early blogs being all text! lol

Thanks for the tip on that! I was not looking forward to all that coding nonsense. Thank God there is now a simpler way to do it. I will have to give it a try tomorrow. To add to what I was saying above,DL makes me nervous. My Twitter got hacked recently on the same day my wife lost 62 books from her Kindle after an update! She was able to get them back with some help from a customer service rep. I also have decided I need to learn more about cloud computing. How to master it and use all of its potential. I guess we have to prepare for the future of gaming.

I hate the idea of the cloud from what I understand of it. Having digital back-ups is cool, and I've taken advantage as far as movies on Ultraviolet, but the part where the "cloud" is something with several accounts connected to it? Oh hell no!

There is a damn good reason I don't sign into my bank account with facebook. lol

Definitely not the death of console gaming, Celt! However I have been contemplating becoming a pc gamer. Not because I have a vendetta against consoles or anything, it's just nice to be able to customize something. (Believe me, if I had the money to get a PS4 and pc I'd get them both but when people are on a limited budget they have to choose.)

However, I'm not 100% sure just yet. My mind is malleable and can change!

As much as I like the ease of clicking a button and having a game downloaded to my console, I do agree that nothing beats a physical copy. I don't see game companies completely phasing out physical formats, but I could see them go towards formats similar to Vita, and DS games. Less moving parts could be the next "innovation" for home consoles.

Sony said that they will stick with the physical form of the game in the ps4, but every game will have a digital copy+ they said that a big number of PlayStatiion owners doesn't have good internet connection...

I can get with the physical media having a digital copy as well.  Just like buying a blu-ray movie.

Also like having my instruction manuals and box art in my hands.  I don't mind buying digital versions of games that are too expensive due to being rarities or being impossible to find.  But I'm not a huge proponent of an all digital gaming world.

An all-digital future does not interest me.  Companies have been pushing for a while now (especially EA) to turn their games into services and not products, where they have complete control over the games you buy.  If that's what they want to do, then that's fine.  I just won't be there to support them.  I also don't like the idea that the cost of storage has now been pushed onto consumers, yet the cost of these digital goods has not decreased to compensate for the change.  It's just a terrible scheme (to take Sony's words for the system), and it saddens me that it has come to this.  At least I still have a massive backlog to keep me company should the entire industry fully embrace the new delivery method.
