It's friday once again and like last week let's move away from first impressions and cover a staple of Youtube: Gaming channels!

There's a lot of video game content over the site: Official sites of journalist, let's players, reviewers, animators, trailer channels and whole lot of stuff. Though of course, like a lot of Youtube, gaming channels don't scape from Sturgeon's Law. Still, the good stuff outdones the bad. For this blog, i'm covering four gaming youtubers I really like. One is very much famous, another is relatively famous, while the other two are not very obscure, but don't have the big viewership of the others. With that said, here's my recommendations:

JonTron doesn't need much intro, since he's one of the most famous figures of gaming channels and with equally famous Egoraptor, co-creator of Game Grumps before he had to retire due to wanting to make more personal content

He talks more about games than making reviews and focuses on weird or unique games (good and bad), NES era, bootlegs and sometimes ocationally movies reviews. If you are expecting something thoughtful, then don't watch as Jon's focus is comedy more than anything, but he does an excellent job as it's the irreverent and surreal humour full of puns, cutaway gags and sudden reactions that make him hilarious. Sometimes it can get a bit grating, but for the most part Jon is entertaining and a fun presence.

Super Bunnyhop

Here's one I discovered thanks to Totalbiscuit, who linked one of his videos on a WTF is.

Bunny covers reviews, editorials on the industry and games, analysis on story aspects and sometimes a bit of let's play, both of the lol and normal kind (though mostly on his early videos). His reviews are fascinating, as he covers deeply into the mechanics and other aspects of a game and what makes them work or not, all very well narrated and good game footage. His editorials are another highlight, often looking at certain genres and problems with the industry, with a lot of good arguments and food for thought. Unless stated, he's more on the serious side and sometimes you may not agree with him, but nevertheless, he's a very interesting person to hear and I think he needs a bit more of love.

Ahoy (formely Xbox Ahoy)

Another one I discovered thanks to Totalbiscuit.

Stuart "Ahoy" Brown used to focus only on analyzing each weapons of the Call of Duty series, maybe with the odd video, but starting last year he started to branch more and it's all good for it. Aside from making interesting videos on real-life weapons as they appear on video games, he started mostly making story compilations of aspects in video games like Easter Eggs and the one above me of graphics in video games. It's very informative stuff and the guy knows very well his research. The minimalistic presentation looks very pleasant to the eyes, he uses good footage, the music is pretty relaxing and my god does he have a lovely english accent. It honestly feels like a tv show about video games due to the way it's presented. Very much another one that needs love.

Extra Credits

To finish, the other famous channel in this blog.

You wanna be a game designer? Work on the industry? Know more about game mechanics? Discover other games? Just love gaming in general? Then I really recommend Extra Credits. The guys work on the industry, so they have a lot of experience behind them and know the beneficies and problems that come along it, so they are well versed on not only how to make games or the components, but on other important aspects like marketing, culture and otherwise gaming in general. With a cartoony presentation, they also entertain the videos with images and otherwise puns and except when needed, they give a very positive look on gaming, but avoid sugarcoating the nasty aspects of gaming, in the end saying how despite it's shortcomings, games matter. It makes for a nice foil of cynical Zero Punctuation.

And that's all for it. I think I had a fifth channel here, but unfortunately my memory failed me. See you next monday.

On other news:

- I just watched at my university Primer. Very excellent and mind screwy stuff.

I'll have to check these out. The only one I'm familiar with on your list is JonTron. Some of my favorite gaming channels are Erika Szabo (she's been on Nerds Without Pants a few times) RetroLiberty, and TheGameChasers. I'd say AVGN, but WTF doesn't know about him lol. I hope you don't mind me plugging them.

No problem, i'll check those. I do know about Erika, since I listened the first part of Asura's Wrath Backloggery Anonymous where she was also a guest.

Yeah, we watch the same youtubers haha. Like, exactly the same. Other ones that I watch regularly though are:

Caddicarus: Finally someone does PS1 reviews!

Matthewmitosis: discovered him a while back thanks to his excellent long form dissection of Demon's Souls, and he's currently reviewing all of the 3D mario games.

Errant Signal: A lot like Super bunnyhop, to the point that they often reference each other.

Mr Btongue: Yet more stuff like Super Bunnyhop but with less of a focus on indie games and more on RPGs and genre as opposed to singular games.

Matt Lees: He's just seriously entertaining in all things he does.

gggmanlives: criminally underrated with like 3000 views per video, he almost exclusively reviews fps, and mostly focuses on 90's shooters no one has ever heard of.

02/14/2015 at 05:19 PM

I had seen Caddicarus and he is pretty damn fun. Kinda like JonTron, but I think they are from the same clicke. Matthewmitosis I haven't seen his videos, but he has appeared frequently on the recommendations and I think Totalbiscuit nominated him for his favorite Youtubers of 2014.

I'll check the others. I think gggmanlives you posted him when you did your youtubers video about two years ago.

JonTron I'm just not a fan of. Maybe because the first review I saw was his Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts review which was just him complaining that they changed it without bringing up any good criticisms. Ever since that, I haven't held his opinion with a lot of weight.

Extra Credits I would still love if their Twitter didn't ruin them for me. Basically James slandered Totalbiscuit and when TB explained why, James then started finding any way he could to call the guy a hypocrite while still trying to seem friendly. I have a hard time enjoying the work of someone who can't admit when they screw up. They're not Moviebob bad, but still, their stance against gamergate has made them say some things I thought they were better than. I'm not even pro-GG, I just think it's made some people show their ugly side and I hate it.

My favorite on Youtube is Classic Game Room, his reviews are mostly that a game is awesome because it has lasers or is cool but could use some lasers. And I get that. Also like Jim Sterling, Totalbiscuit, and EventStatus. Just be prepared for a lot of screaming on that last one.

02/14/2015 at 05:43 PM

You should give Jon another try. His content is much more difrerent nowadays than years ago and like i've stated, he's more for comedy which is why he doesn't do much reviewing anymore.

Man, that sucks with Extra Credits, especially with James because he seemed so cool on his James Recommend videos. I won't give up on their videos, but now i'll be careful to not see their Twitter feed or see any video that deals with social justice on video games. They are really better than that. Kinda sad that Twitter shows the ugly side of some, from Moviebob to Wil Wheaton.

I've seen some videos of Classic Game Room but i'll look more into them. Same with EventStatus. Jim I used to watch back when I visited The Escapist frequently, but I gave up on him long ago due to some of his SJW attitudes that rub me the wrong way. Totalbiscuit doesn't need intro: he's my favorite of all.

Jim is the one person who doesn't irritate me with SJW stuff. He respects other people's opinions on it and is more about getting you to think on the subject than to think like him. Take the Tomodachi gay romances incident for example, Moviebob and every other SJW went on about how Nintendo was wrong and should be shamed while Jim acknowledged they are a business with a bottom line and are from a different culture even though this shouldn't be controversial. Honestly, if every SJW was like Jim, I'd have no issues with them and would probably be on their side

Nice, I know of Jon Tron but haven't seen alot of his stuff yet. My favorites are AVGN, Mega64, and this new one called Ashens. My favorite gaming ones that I see are The Game Theorists, and JWittz which is a Pokemon channel.

02/14/2015 at 05:51 PM

Ashens isn't new really. He has years making videos as I've seen some of them from all the way back in 2011. Man, I love AVGN. I would like to see his movie someday.

02/14/2015 at 01:45 AM

I watch alot of gaming channels on youtube. The only one I know on ur list though is Jontron. I mostly watch Smooth McGames, The Runaway Guys, Jacksepticeye, Continue, Markiplier, PeanutButterGamer, Lucahjin, Projared, and etc. I could keep going, lol! I won't though.

I'll look into the other 3 you posted!

02/14/2015 at 05:54 PM

Oh man, I haven't seen The Runaway Guys since around June of last year. I love those guys.

I'm not a big youtube user, as I mostly have music on and don't want to disturb it (i don't really watch normal TV either) but I know there's a lot of good stuff on there.

02/14/2015 at 05:57 PM

You should give some of them a try. I think you'll like Ahoy better since he is very subdued and calm.

Not a big fan of most Youtube game reviewers.  Most of them resort to yeling and cussing, and it seems that they talk more about the games than actually playing them.  Plus, part of it has to do with me being jealous of them.  I worked so hard in college and after to write game reviews and get to where I am today, which isn't much.  Then all these upstarts come along and poop out videos with a computer and camera and now all of a sudden are able to go to E3 and I'm not.  If I had the materials and knowhow, I could do that, too, but i've got a full time job and other life commitments that keep me from stopping everything just to make videos.  But I will say that I can sometimes tolerate Peanut Butter Gamer.

02/14/2015 at 06:07 PM

Okay, there's definitely cussing and yelling in many youtubers of games, but they are not the only ones. You also have to remember it is NOT exclusive to reviews as some of them just look at the content for comedy, do editorials like the ones i've posted here, maybe do original fan content and many other things. Shame with the E3 thing though.

All those were really great. Got my youtube fix for the night. Thanks.
