Does demon mean something else in Japan?

This doesn't need much intro since the Shin Megami Tensei franchise (or really, anything Atlus) is popular on this site. Here we have the 3DS remake of Devil Survivor, originally released in 2009 for the DS and from the info i've gathered, the remake has more demons, voice acting, a choice for easier difficulty and an aditional 8th day depending on the route you take.
Now, i'm very much a newbie for Atlus, especially for the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, as my only past experience with the franchise had been Persona 3 Portable, which wasn't from the main line. That said, Persona 3 did gave me some of the basis and components of the franchise, so I was a bit ready for Devil Survivor, even if it was another kind of beast.
Devil Survivor is set around 7 day, where you can spend 30 minutes in-game time doing some activities or speaking with people, which alter what ending you'll get depending on which events you decide to interact with and which others you ignore. The battle system is different from Persona; here you are given a map with squares and turns to move like a tactital RPG, but for battling demons you must get close to them and engage them in battle (that is, unless they engage first). Here, you pass to a first person view, where you can attack, guard or heal yourself or the demons you have for battling. Oh yes, you get demons by your side that aid you in combat and level up just like you and gain abilities over time. Have I told that there's no items here either? Just wanted to let you know.
I'm actually really enjoying Devil Survivor so far. The battle system is interesting and easy to understand once you start playing more, the story seems nice, the characters are decent enough at this early in the game and the soundtrack is catchy is quite great (its intro theme more so). Acording to its Tv Tropes page, Devil Survivor is a bit of a beginners game for the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, as it has some of the elements of the main games, but with its own different mechanics and a user friendly interface for fusing demons (haven't gotten to that yet). Though, even on the easy difficulty, the game doesn't hold any hands. This game is challenging and I almost got my whole party killed a couple of times.
In any case, I look forward to playing more of Devil Survivor. I think the game will get even more exciting once I unlock the option to fuse demons.
