Rise of the Tomb Raider Impressions

Posted on 07/27/2016 at 03:26 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I liked the Tomb Raider reboot and am looking forward to playing Rise when it hits PS4.  Yes, they forgot the tombs in the first game, but for me, everything else was an improvement over the older titles.  I loved the original, but I can't even imagine going back to that gameplay-hopping around and holding down the fire button until the enemy is dead and then locking onto the next one, or having to step backwards to get a running start every time you want to jump.  I did like Legend--the first time the series was rebooted imo, but by the time Underworld came out, it had gotten stale again.  I was very skeptical when the reboot was first announced, but after playing it, I felt like they did the series justice.  But yeah, I do miss the elaborate tomb/puzzle design.

Hopefully, enough people will buy Adventures of Mana that Square will reconsider publishing I am Setsuna for Vita.  You could always remote play it lol.

I don't really have a wish list anymore, because Sony's ignored the Vita for so f'ing long I don't really have any expectations.  I'm actually surprised it's still being supported at all (thank you Japan!).  Persona 5 should have been Vita/PS4 instead of PS3/PS4.

I just beat Axiom Verge, and I really liked it, even though I never got around to playing any of the Metroid games (big Castlevania fan though).  Wondering if it's worth the trouble filling out the map (currently at 97%) and all the secret worlds/powerups.

PS Vita, We Hardly Knew Ya!

It is, but you can only have one account on the system, so you'd need a Japanese PSN account for digital games/dlc, etc.  Physical games should work.

PS Vita, We Hardly Knew Ya!

I just charged my Vita again after going more than a year (maybe 2!) without playing it.  I thought about selling it more than a couple of times, but I never pulled the trigger.  It started out very promising and I was really impressed with it when it launched, but it never became popular.  People can point to the expensive memory sticks and the rise in mobile gaming, and while those are certainly valid reasons that the Vita never took off, the main culprit is lack of support/AAA software.  Sony definitely tried during the early days, but you have to understand, the Vita isn't like mobile, where one person can create a game, throw it on the app store, and if he/she's lucky, make a fortune.  Sony wanted the console experience on the go with Vita, but that meant that developers would have to devote a lot of time and money to make a game, and the early sales didn't warrant that.  Publishers didn't want to take the risk of creating a game in hopes that it became a system seller, and people didn't want to buy a system with no games.  So it failed.  Fortunately, it does well enough in Japan (where developers create lots of games that appeal to that market--go figure), that it still gets a lot of really great Japanese-developed software, so for gamers who love RPGs, visual novels, and the like, it's great.  Sony also at least made sure that indy publishers were able to port their PS4 games over to Vita, so there are plenty of those too.

I charged my Vita intending to play Axiom Verge on it, only to find out that it doesn't support cross saves with PS4 :(.  I did download a bunch of games that I got on sale during the many PSN Store flash sales, along with some PS Plus games I added to my download list but never downloaded, and have had fun playing those.  It really is a nice piece of hardware.  Of the games I have, you might like Hot Shots Golf, Katamari, and Little Big Planet.  Those were all good versions of established IPs.

I was a kid in the 80s.  Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will always be my favorite for this reason (not that I like the series all that much, but the setting/music in that game were brilliant).

The PS4 Saga Continues

Maybe try the normal model?  I work in retail and we've had a few come back with similar issues but only a small percentage compared to units sold.  Sucks that you got two though.  I'd complain to Sony.

I don't personally own an XB ONE, but I have to deal with them regularly, and I hate them because they just aren't user friendly.  It takes so much effort just to set one up and start a game.  The PS4 seems lightning fast in comparison.  360 always updated faster than PS3, and now the opposite is true.  How did MS drop the ball so hard?  I do like what MS is doing with backwards compatibility and their line of controllers (elite, customizable), and wish Sony would adopt some of those ideas, but they don't really need to as they're in a comfortable lead at this point.

I tried watching Batman V Superman, and I couldn't stand any more than a half hour.  I'm biased towards Marvel to be sure, but I'll give almost anything a chance, but the plot was so dumb.  Civil War gives me a lot of confidence that Marvel and the Russos can balance all the great characters and deliver a spectacular climax in Infinity War, and I'm looking forward to GotG2 and Thor Ragnarok to see how those films may set it up.

Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator definitely hands Street Fighter its ass, both in the number of characters and especially in the looks dept.  I just can't get into SFV's art style, and the character designs are underwhelming.  I haven't played enough of either to get good though.

Metropolis is one of my favorite anime films, as it is one of a select few that go beyond just looking good and having a lot of action or a mature plot to actually generating an emotional response in me, the viewer.  Macross Plus is another favorite.  Watch the OVA as well as the movie version.  Yoko Kanno is one of the best composers ever.

Sony knows what I like

VR is the future, but not the be all, end all future.  But like you said, people have been dreaming about VR, holodecks, and danger rooms for a long time.
