What is this Smash Brothers thing?

I'm glad you asked that question! For me, the new Smash Bros. info from Nintendo was the most exciting part of E3. The new characters have me excited. I have been anticipating it ever since the info came out that it was in development months ago. First though, a history lesson!

The original Super Smash Bros. came out on the Nintendo 64 and was an immediate success. It was a fighting game with a twist: instead of health bars, there were percentage bars. The purpose wasn't to knock your opponent out by depleting their health. The higher the percentage, the easier it was to knock them out of the stage. It was a concept that worked very well. Even though the roster was very limited, it was great to play as the Nintendo characters in a fighting game.

The next game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, made a strong case for buying a Gamecube. An expanded roster, a single player mode and plenty of fan service made this title a favorite. Some of the characters are clones of each other with variations of moves, but the amount of choices made up for that. Even these days, it's considered the height of the series.

With the Wii came Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It was the largest game yet, and featured a single player mode called the Subspace Emissary. That was the best thing about that game for me, because it was like its own game. After each stage, there were cut scenes which revealed more of the story. The whole thing took about 10-20 hours depending on your skill level. It was also the first game to feature guest characters, a most welcome change. The game did get some criticism for being too casual (ie: tripping!), but overall, this one established the series as a blockbuster franchise.

With E3 came a whole bunch of info on the new game! :nerdgasm: Ahem, for starters, there will be two versions. The Wii U version and the 3DS version. The roster for both of them will be the same, but they will have different arenas. It doesn't look like the game will have a subtitle, instead opting to just use the original title. Also, I'm guessing that there will be some kind of connectivity between the two versions and/or downloadable content. Confirmed to return are the mainstays: Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pit, Donkey Kong and Pikachu. The new characters revealed so far are the Villager from Animal Crossing, the Trainer from Wii Fit, and Mega Man from the original series. Excuse me for a second...

Yeah I'm looking forward to the new Smash Bros games, too. If they put Pac-Man in it, the game will pretty much have all my favorite video game characters in it. :)

Yeah, people are saying that they want Simon in it, too. They want to relive the Captain N cartoon. lol Pac-Man would be epic, though.

I remember thinking when Brawl came out, "What, Mega Man's not in this game?" I thought he should have been, so it's good to see him get his due. I've been a big SSB fan ever since the first game, so this game just might push me to finally get a Wii U. It looks gorgeous in HD too.

Me too. I'll definitely get a Wii U for this game. The original was one of the best games on the N64.

Hey man. Good luck with the move! I am taking a break too because I tried to clean my keyboard and ended up throwing it in the trash lol. IT was so disgusting! Anyway, the new Smash Bros. might be enough incentive for me to get a Wii U. I put countless hours into Melee, plus Microsoft ain't looking too good these days lol.

Thanks! The move was successful. The only bad thing is that there's no internet where I'm at. So the only way I can be online is to go to the library.

This doesn't quite get me to throw money at them, cause while Mega Man is awesome and overdue, I'd prefer Simon Belmont and X (like Wii U X, not SNES/PS Mega Man X) fill the spots taken by the Wii Fit trainer and the Animal Crossing character ... then again, I like having that novelty along the lines of Game & Watch, so who knows? I could end up loving it if I bought a 3DS and/or Wii U.

Nice blog though, I really love this series, even if I haven't been with it since Melee.

I've never heard of Mike Jones or Startropics, but here's the X I'm talking about.

Mega Man X would be a more classic choice, and I'd like him too, though.

One of my most anticipated games for the 3DS by far. I have only played a few of the Smash Bros. games you talked about. But I've always had a blast with them.

Thanks man! The only bad thing I heard about it recently is that there won't be a story mode this time. Hopefully, it'll still be good.
