Late comer to the PS3...but better than not at all

Last week, thanks to that wonderful thing we call tax refunds, I made the jump and finally bought a PS3. It was a matter of timing that it happened the day after PS4 was announced but considering that I've never been an early adopter of consoles (I bought a Wii last year with 6 months to go until its successor arrived), it made perfect sense. I wish that I was able to purchase one in the past (previous tax refunds went to other, pressing needs at the time) but now seemed right because I've felt, more than ever, that I needed one. Yes, the PS4 will be here by the end of the year but it doesn't feel like I'm too late and the game library (and new titles coming out) is too good to pass up anyway.

I suppose having bought a Vita last December made me realize what I've been missing as far as what Sony has been bringing to gaming in this current generation. I think of the Vita as it's own separate gaming device and by no means did I purchase a PS3 specifically to compliment the other (and I haven't taken advantage of the few ways that they currently do). I have an active Plus account so I'm taking full advantage of the services but I've got some catching up to do. So far, I've been playing through the Uncharted series (currently on UC2) and I love the campaign modes. I'm not sure what I'm playing after I finish the third game. I need to play God of War 3 and MGS 4 but Ni No Kuni looks great as well. I'm still gaming on my Xbox 360 (another reason that I haven't bought a PS3 in the past) so I'm looking to system exclusives for the time being.

I've also been pushing through Halo 4's campaign (I'm level 45 in multiplayer) and I usually team up with a friend for some Borderlands 2 co-op. On the Vita, I'm getting into Gravity Rush and I just love the mechanics and look of the game (and the music, MY GOD, the music).

So I'm going to cut it off here but the point being that adding a PS3 to my collection makes me nothing but happy and while I've had no shortage of games, I felt I truly needed it. As this is my first blog on this site, I hope it turned out well and I look forward to meeting some new friends (and reconnecting with old ones from 1up.com, RIP).

As a frequent late adopter myself, may I congratulate you on your purchase?The way I look at it, we actually have the advantage of a huge library of titles to choose from once we finally get a platform.

I, too, bought the PS3 for its exclusives, my primary console being my 360. The Little Big Planet games are amazing, I love how people can create and publish levels for anyone to play. I wish I had the creative spark to make my own, however, it's just as much fun to check out other peoples' levels. If you like Zelda, 3D Dot Game Heroes is a lot of fun. Check out Journey and Flower from thatgamecompany (fLow is interesting, but not in the same league as the other two). If you like rpgs, Ni No Kuni is beautiful, and I like the story. Tales of Graces f is also good. And there are the Ratchet & Clank Future games, if you like platforming and blowing things up in creative ways. Have fun!

I forgot about 3D Dot Game Heroes. I'll have to add that to my wishlist. I've downloaded LBP2 and I agree that the series is amazing (I also own the VIta version). Thanks for the recommendations!

Congrats! I agree with you on the Vita. It's great as a standalone console.

Remember to play Infamous. I love that game. It's open world and truly makes me feel like a superhero.

I got the PSP the day the Vita was announced, actually. I love my PSP. The library is great, it's super comfortable to play with and I think it's great that I can buy PSOne Classics on my PS3 and then play them on the PSP. I think the two consoles go great together.

I saw the PSP for sale for like $50 at The Source the other day. I think that's kind of like a smaller Canadian version of Circuit City. Used to be Radio Shack. I dunno if all stores are liquidating their PSPs for that price, but it could be a great addition if you don't already have one!

I used to own a PSP and I didn't hate it but after a while I didn't use it as much. I'd feel bad about it but after the Vita, there's no way I can go back. Dual analog sticks mean that much to me, among other things.

I have seen PSPs for that low a price (and they're usually the 1000 model). I don't know; that's one too many handhelds for me to deal with.
