BaD: Day One: Movies to Look Forward To

I'm posting this under the assumption that the BaD-themed blogs were to start on the 3rd. If not, fuck it. It's the best I can do. I figure I start this off with 2014 movies that I'm anticipating. Tomorrow I'll focus on music, the next day games. Maybe I'll deal with books or television but I'm all over the place on those categories (old and new) so that'll be trickier. I'll think of something. Currently I'm stuck home due to snow, missing another day of work so I'll have plenty of time to brainstorm.

The Raid 2: Berandal

Anyone here who hasn't seen The Raid: Redemption* needs to remedy that whenever they get the chance. If you want an action film done right (with brains, soul as well as bullets, kicks and punches), this lean and mean 2012 film from Indonesia was a personal favorite from that year. The director, Gareth Evans, is the next big thing as far as action film directors go and he's found his Tony Jaa in Iko Uwais (who starred in Evan's first film, Merantau*, which you should also check out). The sequel to The Raid, Berandal, will be in U.S. theaters March 28. It premiered in the Sundance Film Festival last week and word of mouth on it is that its an action film epic (2 1/2 hours in length) that expands the world of the first film, raises the stakes even higher and features set pieces that can shame the first film (no easy feat).

The Lego Movie

Do I really need to explain why?

How To Train Your Dragon 2

The first one was a great surprise. Usually I shit on anything Dreamworks churns out but the first film had an equal balance of humor, warmth, unique world-building and pop culture references (but not too much). Also, characters weren't screaming or punching each other for no reason or being catapulted into the sky for an extreme closeup that no one wanted. The teaser trailer that came out last year shows off some nice jumps in animation so I'm hoping the story is up to snuff.

Veronica Mars

My brother and I were huge fans of this show during its initial run. If you haven't seen the three seasons, do so. It's a clever modern take on Nancy Drew that's anchored by Kristen Bell's wonderful performance. I'm so glad the movie is coming out. Revisiting this cast will be great and hopefully the plot is up to snuff with the best of the tv series.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

After that Super Bowl trailer, how can you not want to see this? This is probably the last film I bet Robert Redford would ever find himself in but I also bet that he knocks his role out of the park. And the Winter Soldier looks menancing.

Exodus

I'm always up for the next Ridley Scott joint (where's Prometheus 2, buddy?) so I wonder how his take on Moses (Christian Bale) leading Jews out of Egypt will turn out. I love his period epics (1492: Conquest of Paradise notwithstanding) so, fingers crossed.

Noah

Speaking of biblical epics, this looks fascinating. The trailers have piled on the eye candy but I've read reports that the script digs deeper into character interaction, especially in later scenes involving Noah and his family/friends on the Arc. I'm not sure we ever needed a movie for this subject but Darren Arononfsky is one of the great directors working right now (Requiem For A Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan) so I hope this isn't hokey or overwrought.

Nymphomaniac

Yeah, I'm a Lars Von Trier fan. I'm not up for everything he's made (and most of his films I can't watch more than once) but few people shake things up cinematically like he does. Making a 2-part film about a woman's sexual adventures throughout her life probably won't be as arousing or fun as I'd like it to be but it'll be unlike anything else (which is par the course for Von Trier films). Kinda wish Shia LeBeouf wasn't involved but I'll get over that.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

It's the next Wes Anderson movie. There's a running theme on my picks (if you haven't noticed) that I'm up for titles simply because of who is in the directing chair. That's mostly because I have faith in these filmmakers and for the most part, they haven't let me down (although, Wes, what was going on in The Darjeeling Limited?). This looks zany a la The Life Aquatic and any film that puts Ralph Finnes in a comedic role is enough to get my ass in a theater.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

I wasn't a huge fan of the first film but Catching Fire caught me completely by surprise. Beautifully shot, scripted and acted it ceased to be just another YA book adaptation and emerged as a serious, honest-to-goodness quality sci-fi film. I haven't read any of the books and I'm aware of the so-so reputation of the third book so I hope whatever choices they make will come out as a stronger film. Plus, Jennifer Lawrence hopefully shoots more people with arrows. Done and done.

Jupiter Ascending

Fuck anyone who disapproves: I LOVE the Wachowski siblings and every film they've made. Here, they return to sci-fi (first since the Matrix series) and this one looks crazy and inventive and I'm dying to know what the setup is because we've only got bits and pieces. They raised the bar with Cloud Atlas and I want them to keep pushing higher.

Godzilla

That teaser gave me goosebumps. If they can evoke the nihilism and awesome sights of the original film, this will be one of the best films of the year. Please be great.

Gone Girl

Anytime David Fincher comes up with a new film, I'm there. I'm currently reading the novel by Gillian Flynn and it's a fascinating take on not only the missing-person mystery but of marriages and the emotional rollercoster that both bring out but also the sad, stinging question of "Do we ever really REALLY know the person that we love?" Flynn also wrote the script (and redid the ending) so I'm truly curious as to how this will come out. Plus, I've got a crush on Rosamund Pike and if she plays her part right....oh god..it's gonna be a doozy.

Inherent Vice

It's the next Paul Thomas Anderson film (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, The Master) which adapts a Thomas Pynchon novel. It has a great cast (Joaquin Phoenix, Jena Malone, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Benecio Del Toro, Martin Short, Maya Rudolph) and PTA approaches films with the weirdest sense of plot progression these days. I love everything he's done so I can't wait.

Read more at http://www.hitfix.com/galleries/25-most-anticipated-movies-of-2014#bgpacTL5ZUAtS3ul. PTA doesn't bother with standard narratives anymore; he has the clout and power to do what he wants the way he wants it and it will be special. I know it.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Every year, there's a film that for me, has to get it right. Along with any expectations, the baggage that comes along with it just upps the stakes. Last year, it was Man of Steel and I know not everyone where like it but I loved it. It needed to work for me, if no one else; it needed to be different and focused and powerful in a way that the previous films were not (or couldn't be). With Days of Future Past, we have Bryan Singer coming back to direct. He's the man that got this franchise started with the first 2 films; the 2nd one is still the best of the franchise (with The Wolverine close behind with its claws). The plot just looks fucking bonkers. With two time periods to contend with and an even more expanded cast, I hope it doesn't prove to overstuffed. I hope everyone gets a chance to shine. And those Sentinels look bad ass.

Interstellar

It's the next Christopher Nolan film. Damned if I know what it's about and if I don't know anything right up to the moment I see it, I'd be okay with that.

The Hobbit: There And Back Again

After the crazy cliffhanger that Desolation of Smaug ended with, I need to see this. I NEED TO.

That's it for now. These are what immediately come to mind or are the most important. I'll welcome any sleepers or any titles that I'm not interested in to intrigue me the further in the year that we get.

My brain can't think too far ahead but I'm looking forward to the LEGO movie and the new Muppet movie right now.

Agh! I forgot the new Muppet movie!

I usually don't see movies until they come on the TV these days. That's a whole lotta viewing right there.

As a lego builder for life the lego movie is the top on my must see list. X-men Days of Future Past is also is a top one for this year too.

BaD is only officially on week days. Indeed, fuck it.

They're making a sequel to Raid:Redemption? YEEESSSSS!!! I'll never understand why Cinema Snob and co. liked Dredd better, though I dig both flicks. Funny that such similar ideas came out at such similar times. Also funny that Dredd was in production earlier than Raid, but released later. Raid was pure kinetic energy and martial art badass violence, and I can not wait! Plus it releases just five days after I turn 24? Aww, yeah!

I too look forward to LEGO movie. If anything will justify how corporate their sets have become, it's how good that movie looks.

I've always liked Dreamworks and Pixar flicks for somewhat different reasons, but I know what you mean. I thought the first Dragon movie was decent, saw it in 3D on a date. I wasn't blown away like I was hyped to be, though. I prefer when Dreamworks says "fuck it" to trying to emulate Pixar's depth and makes something awesomely goofy like Despicable Me 1 and 2, but not something that takes it in a far too stupid direction, which I've heard Shark Tale does; never had desire to watch that one. I think I'd have enjoyed HtTYD more had it not cost $22 for myself and the date. Yell

Cap is not my favorite of the Marvel heroes, but I did like his pre-Avengers movie the best of the bunch, and this is so far my top movie to see in 2014. It looks amazing

Didn't know there were two Biblical epics out this year, but I'm down for Aaronofsky's take on Noah and Ridley Scott doing Exodus, for sure. I've had the cartoon movie Prince of Egypt (another great Dreamworks flick) in my Netflix cue just to see the amazing parting of the seas sequence I saw in the theater as a kid.

Funny you mention Nymphomaniac, my professor mentioned today how that trailer played before a G-rated movie in Florida. Laughing I however, will not get over Shia LeBeouf being involved. Seriously, fuck that guy.

I loved Moonrise Kingdom, but wasn't as fond of The Fantastic Mr. Fox, though I liked it. I may check Anderson's new one out.

Actually, Mockingjay is my favorite of the series, Catching Fire my least, but CF was a much better adapted movie, I will say that. Improved on the book, in my opinion. Honestly though, all it had to do was remove the shaky cam. I still find the plot of the first book/movie much less predictable and more interesting, but oh well. It was a better movie than the first installment, if a bit of a retread (not the movie's fault, the books had the same problem).

I've heard pretty much everyone bash Cloud Atlas for overreaching and failing to be what it wanted to be, with bad makeup, except for you and Nostalgia Chick, who loved it. I'm curious to see it for myself. I honestly don't think the makeup is that bad from what I';ve seen. I've actually only seen the second Matrix and V for Vendetta by them, I think, but I'm probably forgetting others.

I've never liked Godzilla that much, which explains why I actually really liked the one I saw in theaters at age 8, but this new one looks intense. Definitely on my list to see in theaters.

I need to see more of Fincher's movies. Saw Fight Club and most of Seven well after release, Social Network was favorite movie of 2010, Girl w/Dragon Tattoo was a great visual remake, and I didn't know he directed a couple House of Cards episodes, but I like him even more now.

I still have mixed feelings about There Will Be Blood and The Master, but both were at least great movies, I'll admit. I still need to see Boogie Nights, as it's my friend Will's favorite movie, but I never seem to be able to find it.

I'm gonna avoid MoS discussions on the Internet from now on, and you know why, but hopefully Singer doesn't pull a Returns either, and I'm confident he won't. I've never actually seen GoT, but I'm excited for Peter Dinklage as the creator of the Sentinels, a plot point I remember being a big one in the 90s cartoon I grew up watching (but honestly not liking that much, though I think I'd like it better now; it was more my older brother's thing).

I dig Nolan's older films as well as Inception (only ever desired to see it once, though) and TDK is still my favorite superhero movie, even if I was also one that saw a lot of flaws in TDKR (though I still really liked it). I'm excited.

Finally, I liked the first Hobbit movie more than most critics, but hot damn, I loved the action-packed second installment! To be honest, I've always watched these movies 20% for plot and characters etc., 80% for Jackson's action directing and massive battles, and holy crap, that scene in the Elf forest kingdom is one of the best uses of a tracking shot and editing and kills I've ever seen! The rest of the movie was great too, and having actually read The Hobbit all the way through and enjoyed it, I'm more invested in these characters and the plot, and I'm starting to like the added bits about what Gandalf was doing away from the group that I guess are from The Simarillion. Not sure how they'll do the third one in a balanced way, though, there wouldn't be a whole lot of pages left at this point in the book and all that's really left outside of whatever's from The Simarillion they've added is ... I won't spoil it.

I concur with Cary's Muppets suggestion. Please don't make a blog this long about a topic like movies I'm so interested in again. I'm exhausted. And apologies for blog in a blog. Good Lord, you'd think I'd get enough of writing as a Master's student. lol

RE Cloud Atlas: As far as the makeup goes, as long as you accept that the actors aren't supposed to be completely unrecognizable every time, it works. It also compliments a theme in the film that human beings repeat actions throughout history, so giving an actor multiple roles in which they can explore different personalities helps. It's also cheaper for the budget that a bigger cast didn't have to be assembled.

As far as Fincher goes, you've hit most of the high points already but definitely make time for Zodiac. I think its his best film.

Hey, I appreciate you took the time to read and comment almost point-by-point. Take a nap if you need to. I did.

Saw The Raid very recently. It had the longest three person fight scene EVER. I think each of them killed the other like three times. The movie was great though. So much tension and great action. I can see why the makers of Dredd decided to copy it.

And How to Train You Dragon 2? I was happily surprised by the first one too. My Nephew used to watch the TV show and was obsessed with the different skills of the Dragons. I'll see a sequel for sure.

To be fair, both Dredd and The Raid were in production at the same time so I don't suspect one ripped off the other. They share a similar premise but execute them in different ways.

The final fight with Mad Dog is exhausting. I love when Rama's brother shoves that light bulb shard into his neck and all it does is piss him off.

So many good fight moments in that movie. That one fight almost went too far. BTW was there a Wilhelm Scream when that guy got tossed out a window in The Raid? If it was it was clipped short because I really couldn't tell if it was a Wilhelm or not.

Can't wait for Veronica Mars! Good to see another fan! I will actually go to the theater to see that one.

Of the ones you listed, I'm most looking forward Noah, Nymphomaniac, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and possibly the new X-Men.  Like you, I am a big follower of directors (and writers).  I still need to see the latest Coen Brothers movie.  I'm not really sure what else I'm going to want to see, mostly because I usually find out about movies after they are already out.  Probably the Sin City Movie.  I'm also hoping the new Robocop will be good, but I don't really have my hopes up for it.

I actually really like the Darjeeling Limited.  To be honest, at first I wasn't sure what to think about it, but the more times I watched it (probably 4 times now), the more I loved it.  The same thing happend with The Life Aquatic.

I have mixed feelings about Cloud Atlas.  I like the Wachowskis well enough, but I was more excited about Tykwer being a co-director.  I think my expectations were just too high.

Edit.  Holy crap, just scanned your list again and saw PT Anderson's Inherent Vice.  I had no idea he had another movie coming out soon.  Another must see.

avidacridjam

I should revisit The Darjeeling Limited. It's a different, somber film compared to the rest of his work and I think I couldn't connect to the characters enough, especially the Jason Schwartzman character.

To be fair, I attributed Cloud Atlas to the Wachowski's but I forget that Tykwer contributed so much with his segments and his music.

I thought about Sin City 2 but I'm not excited for it. I love the first film, but after The Spirit and his writing for All-Star Batman & Robin, I think Frank Miller is creating sub-par material these days.

Not that excited for Robocop either. The first one is great simply for the combination of the script and Paul Verhoeven's nutball touches. These days I'm convinced that it's an accident/miracle that the film is as good as it is. The new film just looks like a generic video game cutscene. I want to be surprised, though.

I'm excited about the Veronica Mars film, I have all three seasons on DVD, and actually watched the show as it aired. Unfortunately, I think the nearest theater that is going to show it is Boston, and much as I want to see it, I'm not travelling 2+ hours to see a movie.

Looking forward to the new Cap movie, too. Also want to seeThe Monuments Men. I was already familiar with the history behind the movie (thank you Smithsonian Magazine!) and it's a sbject I'm interested in, plus George Clooney is in it.

Yes, you do need to explain about the LEGO movie.

Well, I meant that I shouldn't have to explain why I'd want to see it. As for the film's plot, that's another discussion entirely.
