Hi. Today I talk about the greatest Nintendo game of all time. And that game is

*drumroll*

Super Mario Bros. 3!

I was fortunate enough to own this game as a kid. It was only me and my mom, so we were somewhat poor. I only really owned about 5 games as a kid. SMB 1 & 3, Little Nemo, Ninja Gaiden II, and one more.

Anyway, when this game came out, Mario was already popular. Mainly because of the SMB Super Show. It was a really cool cartoon as a kid. It had live action segments with wrestler "Captain" Lou Albano, a title song "rap", and elements from the first two games. Plus it had the Zelda cartoon on Fridays, based off of Zelda II. Basically, it combined everything that was "cool" in the 1980's.

ANYWAY, this game seemed to come out of nowhere, and man, was it good. Almost everything about the other games was here. Strangely enough, SMB 2 stuff was mostly absent, the reasons of which didn't become clear to me until much later.

It was the first with a map, and it was almost as essential to the game's success as the stages themselves. You could use items to help you out whenever you wanted for the first time as well. And man, was this game loaded with stuff, from enemies to hidden things like Warp Whistles. It really took it to the next level as far as platformers go. I don't remember exactly, but I think that it was the largest NES game as far as storage goes as well. It was so successful that it spawned its own cartoon as well.

The late 1980's really belonged to Nintendo during that time. There was cereal, watches, pins, comics, and even Dixie Cups that bore Nintendo property. If you lived during that time, you might have been a Nintendo kid. It was kind of like a social standing.

Eventually, the Sega Genesis came out. It was the first challenger to the Nintendo throne, boasting a more powerful machine and a mascot which sought to rival Mario. Sadly, I never owned one as a kid. Although, time eventually told of what happened to the "console wars." Still, for a time, Nintendo held onto the throne with an iron grip.

I never had an NES. My first nintendo system was my GBA SP, and then I got a Game Cube. I have one of those multi-consoles now that plays NES and SNES games and I have a few games, but none of the classics.

Yeah, they can be hard to find. Try to check out flea markets and video stores if you are so inclined. If you are lucky enough to live near a retro game store like I am, then it is a lot easier.

Plenty of places to buy the games, no money to do so at the moment. There are several really great places near by that sell retro games for decent prices and guarantee tht they will work.

I actually like Mario 2 and Mario World better, but SMB3 is still a good game.

I love Super Mario 3 but I'd still pick Mario 64 over it.

64 really blew my mind as well, but as far as 2D platformers go, 3 was definitely tops. I would have a really hard time deciding between the two on a deserted island!

Yep, if we are going 2D then Mario 3 would be the one

like Mothman, my favorite Mario game is 64, but I played a lot of SMB3 back in the day too.  Cool game, great graphics, neat powers.

Mario 3 is easily my favorite Mario game. We were the first to get it on our block and EVERYBODY in the whole neighborhood came over that day lol. It's funny because I have forgotten a lot of crap over the years. Yet, I still remember ultra obscure secrets in Mario 3. It's not my favorite NES game though. (Cough, cough, avatar, cough)

Haha, it's funny how many "friends" come out of the woodwork when you have something cool!

Super Mario 3 was definitely my favorite NES game as well. Wow, thinking about gaming back in the 80's, it was all Nintendo, no one else came close.

I went from NES to Sega Genesis though, so I never played Super Mario World until it came out for Gameboy Advance. Still not have beaten that game to this day.

Sega Genesis, so many memories, lol: Sonic the Hedgehog, Rocketknight Adventures, Punisher, Streets of Rage...etc. Miss those days.

I went from NES to SNES myself. I miss the silver age of gaming, too!

Yea, gaming seemed so much more excting then. Not to say there is anything bad about the current. Just thinking about when me and my brother would get a new game then taking turns playing through it, awesome times.

Loved Rocket Knght Adventures! Even if I could never beat the final boss.

I played it so much that I did end up beating it. It was a tough game. I also loved the sequel, Sparkster.

Never owned a Genesis either, but oddly have no memory of SMB3 outside of that Wizard movie and playing it online more recently.

Oops! I forgot to include that in my blog. I should have. It just goes to show how big that Nintendo was back then.

I got SMB3 on Virtual Console and really liked the map screen and how you would move around that and then go into a 2D world.

Exactly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that it was the first game to do that.

Well, I was surprised to see that in a NES game. So maybe.
