GLaD #7: Nintendo Loses the Crown

After the Super Nintendo, the Nintendo 64 was released on September 29th, 1996.  I remember the date well, because it was my birthday. It seemed like it was meant to be, because I convinced my mom to get it for my birthday. Things were going well at that time. We were living in Detroit, she had found steady work and a new man, and we were stable for the first time in awhile. I had such a great time with Super Mario 64, and I knew that I would enjoy many new gifts from the gaming gods.

After I completed it 100%, I dove into Ocarina of Time. That was quite a game as well, which I finished 100%. Then, a curious thing happened. Rather, a LACK of anything I liked was released. Mario Kart 64 wasn't as good as the original, neither was Yoshi's Story. Goldeneye really wasn't my cup of tea, nor the new Castlevania. Star Fox 64 was great, and so was Super Smash Bros. But other than those, what was there, really? I was getting kind of frustrated, because the stable lineup of RPG's that I was getting into with the SNES was hugely noticeably absent on the 64.

Turns out that the third party developers had mainly jumped ship from the Nintendo dictatorship. I had heard about some drama years later. The big N had developed some hubris, it had seemed, and they weren't going to support a company that demanded unreasonable things in their eyes. The cost of new cartridges was a factor, for one, as well as their strict quality assurance needs. Going so far as to tell developers how to make their games for a Nintendo console and what they couldn't put in them.

As for me, I ended up buying only about a dozen games for that console. Which was disheartening, because I had about 30+ with their previous one. I was even getting games that I didn't like, because I was getting really starved for something new to play. Eventually, I just sold the whole collection, because I just didn't want it.

I bought another one years later. I still have a few of the really good ones. Somehow I ended up with a bunch of crap games again, too. I think I have about a dozen of them all together. It makes me forget sometimes that I had ever sold it in the first place. lol

The N64 has plenty of great games, but it is most certainly lacking in RPGs. The best RPGs for the system would be Paper Mario and Ogre Battle 64. Have you played those?

The PS1 definitely dominated between the two consoles, but let's not forget that some of the best games are to be found on the N64.

I think I missed those because I had bought a Playstation by then and moved on. I really should try them out sometime.

I loved the N64. I only bought about 16 games for it but they were all lots of fun.

I did have some fun with some of them as well. I'm not knocking the system, it's just that there was a big shortage of game releases compared to the SNES at the time.

I remember the first year was so bad. There were less than 20 games released at the end of it and that's just pitiful.

I am not an RPG fan, so I had plenty of fun with N64, but I get where you're coming from. Goldeneye really wasn't my cup of tea, either.

I did like the game, but I never owned it because shooters don't appeal to me all that much. I'm more into rpg's and action games.

More into action and platformers, myself, feel the same about shooters as you do (though I avoid RPGs even more).

Due to its lack of good games, the N64 was the first console that caused me to get another company's game system.  I got a PlayStation about a year and a half after I got my N64 and that was one of my best game console purchases ever.  I was reviewing PSOne games left and right after that.

I never reviewed PS1 games. It's never too late to start though, lol.

I bought a N64 a while back. I only have 10 games for it and I don't know what else to buy lol. I've searched through release lists. Nothing appeals to me. I mainly wanted it for Killer Instinct Gold. Time hasn't been so kind to some of those early gen 3D games.

Especially the ones for PS1. Early 3D looked pretty crummy to me back then, too. I was spoiled to gorgeous 2D with the SNES. heh KIG was a pretty fun game, as well.

Yeah, before the N64, I was a full Nintendo fan.  But the PlayStation changed all that because they just seemed to have more interesting games in greater numbers and they're prices weren't nearly as high as a N64 cartridge.

Me too. Seems like we had the same experience almost.

I got a N64 sometime after it was out and managed to not play any of the highly rated games for it. Instead I played games like Hexen, Pokemon Snap, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Destruction Derby 64, Duke Nukem 64, and Clay Fighter 63 1/3. There's still some games I'd like to play on it like Conker's Bad Fur Day, the Banjo games, Ogre Battle 64 and Paper Mario. It's a great system. I'll never get rid of mine.
