I Waited 4 Hours To Play The New Smash Bros, This is What I learned

So yeah I went to that Smash Fest at Best Buy yesterday, thinking it would really easy, I mean I would be at a Best Buy on Wednesday?

Man I was so wrong. I ended up waiting 4 HOURS to play Smash 4 enduring some really annoying kids (seriously, I kind of want to write an entire blog on it made me super depressed that kids like that reflect many problems in gaming culture) but I did play both the 3DS and Wii U version, briefly, Like SUPER Brief but hey some is better than none. I can’t go into super techy stuff but overall I will say that is better than Brawl. The pace feels really fast, part of my disappointment with the time that got to play with was the fact that it wasn’t long enough to get a feel for my characters. It didn’t help that when we played on  the Wii U, we used pro controllers which weren’t the greatest for the game. Terrible? No but you really need the old GC controllers for this game. I choose Zelda and Zero Suit Samus and both played fairly decent. I loved Zelda’s phantom summon, thing moves out fast and hits hard. Her teleport on the other hand, kind of blows now and it got me killed more times than saved me. ZS Samus is freaking quick as sin and was hard to control. She has excellent reach on her attacks but they take awhile to do much damage. I wish I could say more about the other characters but we only had two matches at a time for 2 minutes, no stocks. So I didn’t get a feel for everyone else. I will say though that Mega Man was winning a lot that day from the few glimpses I got while waiting in line.

I also had a chance to play Smash Run on the 3DS version…which was literally attached to a nice little old lady from Nintendo going down the line. No lie, the system was tethered to her on the hip to the lady. She was very nice too, felt bad for her enduring all of those rude kids. Anyway, Smash Run was fun. I got stuck with Mega Man because you didn’t get to choose due to time constraints. And the 3DS version isn’t best for controls either. I mean it plays really well. Its smooth like the Wii U version but I just kept fumbling the controls around. I don’t know maybe it was due to the limited time we had. Also MM was kind of clunky. Not a bad fighter but one need of some more mobility and faster start up to attacks.

Overall, I would say this game is already better than Brawl. Does it have competitive legs? I can’t really tell right now. The tourny Nintendo put up on Tuesday suggests yes but from my brief time I can’t really say. I will say that it was good and I would go again, minus the long lines and pretentious kids. If you feel adventurous enough, Best Buy is doing a second demo on Saturday 12-5 PM. If you do go, GO EARLY. REAL EARLY. I got their at 3:50, 10 minutes before the actual event, and the line stretched around the store.

And seriously Nintendo, you need to treat your little old ladies, or any of your employees, going to events like this right. The crap they endure for your behalf is noteworthy.  Like give them metal or award. Or at least some free complementary coffee and aspirin. Fuck I need that after just attending.

Damn man four hours is a long time!   Sounds fun though.  I worry about the controls on the 3ds but smash is going to be the reason i finally get an xl.  Cant wait to play it, thanks for the preview!

I actually did play it on a XL and it was great because of the size. Now that I think about it, I got confused due to the fact the controll pad on the 3DS does controll your character but does taunts. I would keep insticntively keep going for the pad to move, when it was the nub/stick thing was actual movement. Hopefully we can switch the controls around for that.

I'd like to go to it on Saturday, but It's probably too far and I can't drive anyway.  Too bad it wouldn't be like E3 or PAX and they'd let me cut in line since I was a member of the press. :)

Shoot, I should have said that I was apart of the press, Maybe I would have gotten up the line faster. lolTongue Out

I may incline to agree with Smash 4 surpassing Brawl (my favorite), but once the game gets released i'll be the judge.

I'd be interested in reading what those kids said.

Pacing at least, 4 leaves Brawl in the dust. This is a really good paced game.

As for the kids, they were just really rude and mean. They made really rude comments ( I remeber one making a "lovely" joke about Asians that was really bad taste) and were just pushy to themselves and everyone around them.

Sucks about the kids. I think it would had been funny and cool if you confronted one of them in the demo and won.

Basically, being living Youtube comments in the worst sense of the phrase.

That is excatly why I refuse to go those things every year. Its just not worth the headache and stress it would induce. Ill just wait for the game to release, it will save me the pain. I do however give you kudos for braving it!

Yeah, usually I don't do these things myself but Wednesday was the only time I had to try because I work on Saturday night and sleep in the day. After that though, I don't think I'll ever do something like this again or at least without some friends.

I'm not sure I'd have the patience to wait four hours just to try out the new Smash for a few minutes. Especially if I had to deal with overly noisy/obnoxious people on top of that.

Wonder what's the reasoning behind having people tethered to their handhelds, maybe a very low-tech way of preventing theft?
