There’s a new 3DS, stupidly called “New” 3DS

It comes in two sizes, standard and XL

It has an additional c stick and amiibo support

Its significantly faster, lighter than a normal 3DS/XL

It has face plates that can be taken out and customized

There’s a port of Xenoblade coming to the 3DS (EDIT: Its only for the New 3DS)

Shulk is newest character for Smash 4

Bravery Second is coming to Japan in Winter

The “New” 3DS will come in October in Japan no word on the West yet.

On unrelated note: Get some rest, Iwata. That tumor took a lot out of you and I hope you get better soon.

I just read about all this. I'm glad I couldn't afford an XL right now or I'd be kicking myself. I sold my copy of Xenoblade after I finished it so I'd be happy to have a 3DS version.

I have my 2DS but Ill prolly buy a new 3DS XL when they launch. I dont blame people for being upset over this though, that wasnt the best move in the book for them to do. If they were really set on releaseing a new whole model with some bigger changes they should have waited and not released any other model types until they were ready for this one. There is a lot of anger especially with it being known there will be exclusive games for it.

Part of me thinks the whole reason for the New 3DS was for the decline of the 3DS in Japan and not really the whole world. Nintendo's fiscal year for the 3DS last year wasn't up to their projections. It wasn't terrible but not ideal. So releasing a New 3DS, re-relesing a popular game in Japan for the system, and doing it with in the same year might be a way to recapture all of those lost profits. Then again it could go belly up. Who knows.

Didn't know about the tumor. Hope he's better.

Agreed. To me, just looked he was still in recovery in the Direct and I just want him to rest and get better.

yeah, people are generally pissed about this, and so am I.  having to have a new 3ds to play certain games kind of sucks.

That said, I'm buying the fuck out of this thing.

Sadly, I'm kind of leaning toward getting this...The XL looks so boss to play Smash on.

So, hopefully this means that we will get SNES support on the Virtual Console...

With the extra triggers it has? Oh yes, please.. Or more GBA content because that kind of make sense considering its a handheld system.

No, not because of triggers, but because of the better hardware.  I remember seeing that the specs have been bumped up, I do not know by how much, but there is a bump.  I am assuming that is why they are able to  port Xenoblade to the 3DS then and make it exclusive to the SUPER 3DS.(I do not like "NEW" and will forever refer to the NEW 3DS as the Super 3DS from this point on.)

Oh, my bad. Frankly I think the normal 3DS shouldn't have any problem with a SNES rom. So a Super 3DS, which is an awesome better name for system you came up with, should have no excuse to play.

I was waiting on a redesign on the 3DS XL. Faster, lighter! Yes please! Sucks for current XL owners though.

True. I hate to be a XL owner right now thinking they wouldn't have to upgrade again.

I'm kinda conflicted about the fact that the may put my 3DS obsolete. Hope they don't do that Frown

It won't. It will be like every other Nintendo handheld, older generation formats will be around for awhile. I mean there are games still being made for DS, so I doubt the New 3DS will spontanously become the default format anytime soon.

As someone who still owns an OG 3DS and copy of Xenoblade, I don't see a reason to pick up a 'New' 3DS anytime soon. Though that could very well change depending on the games that'll only work for it.

The only reason I have a vauge interest in the system is because my 3DS is almost on its last legs and I've always wanted to get XL. But hearing that it only takes Micro SD cards means it might be a pain to transfer all of the stuff over which may not even be worth the effort.

Remember when the N64 came out with the expansion pack and you had to have it to play certain games. Yeah that.

I'll be right there with Snee on this. Where can I sell organs in Canada? No? Blood then? Also no? Let's see now my kids are too old to sell for medical experiments, there must be some other way to do this.

Wouldn't be nice if Nintendo allowed you to trade Club Nintendo points for a New 3DS or knocked the price off a little? Then that's not Nintendo. Nintendo has done anything logical its 125 years of existence, so why start now? Tongue Out

The only reason I'm excited for the new 3DS is because my 3DS may break anytime now, it's pretty old and I've had it since launch. I've been wanting to get a new one cause my Circle Pad doesn't work well which isn't good cause of SSB, the 3D Slider is off but sometimes the 3D is on, it freezes often, sometimes the wireless doesn't work well, there's this scratch on the screen that's because of the design, and the volume, you can hear the game sounds or music despite sometimes the volume being in the off position. I guess I'll have to hold on for a while longer till the new one arrives.

On Xenoblade, I have the Wii one but I'll most likely get it to see if they added anything new. Shulk for SSB, well he was leaked but now that we know he's officially in the game, the leaked roster might have some credibility. As for Mr. Iwata, despite all the hate he get's, you have to admire how much work he puts into the company despite going through that health issue. He definitely needs a rest.

My 3DS is kind of on its last legs as well. Frequent abuse from a younger cousin of mine through out the years is kind of to blame so I've always wanted to get an XL. Now I'll just have to wait until next year to get a New 3DS XL thing.

I'd consider it if there was an exclusive game for it. I'm not all that keen on upgrading just for Amiibo and better hardware.

Vice's Assistant

09/01/2014 at 09:38 PM

According to Iwata, there are several games being developed exclusively for the system, including the Xenoblade port. This isn't a new thing for Nintendo to, especially for the handheld market. I remember when the Gameboy Color came out and games started to be exclusively made for it which split the market, until the Color slowly became the preferred format.

If Etrian Odyssey went to it or a Fire Emblem game, that could make me buy.

That's kind of a weird thing for NIntendo to do but I don't care about Xenoblade so as long as they make an Amibo adapter for the regular 3DS, I think I'm good.  Maybe.

I believe they stated at E3 that there would be a separate 3DS attachment for Amiibo.
