The Randup

And now for something completely different!

I was reading Rangergirl's random update earlier today, and in it she mentioned she'd been on a sort of gaming lull, and talked about some different things going on in her life. I'd been thinking of doing something similar so I thought, "What the heck!"

I haven't been up to too much gaming lately. I've managed to get a few fights in in Fire Emblem, progressed the story a bit and took on some more DLC fights, which was fun.

Yesterday evening, however, I received a package in the mail from RetroZone. I had mentioned in a previous blog that I'd recently set up my new Gameboy Player, and was playing a little Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. I found my cheap, knock-off Gamecube controller was mucking up the experience, however, so I lamented that I wished I had the money to buy one of those Hori Gamecube controllers that look like a SNES controller. Well, I found a much less expensive option, that's probably even better!

SNES Adapter for GamecubeThe SNES to Gamecube/Wii Adapter from RetroZone

I picked up one of these handy adapters for about $17 (I think it was a little over $20 with shipping) and now I can play my GBA games on a TV with a SNES controller, which is pretty awesome. I also tried it out on my Wii for virtual console games, and it works like a charm there as well. I'm pretty pleased with it. I've been playing Circle of the Moon for about a half hour now with it, and although the controls are still a little clunky (I'm getting used to them), it's much better than it was with my GC controller.

That's about it for gaming, though. As I write this I'm trying out a new coffee. I'm a big coffee drinker, and I like to try out all different varieties. My sister got me a Mini Keurig for Christmas as few years back, so I have the opportunity to easily try all different kinds. I'm not that into flavoured coffees, but I picked a few up on my last trip to the coffee shop and I'm now testing out Timothy's Sugar Bush Maple.

Timothy's Sugar Bush Maple K-CupJust a little too sweet, I think.

It's alright. Like I said, I don't usually drink flavoured coffee, and I think this one might be a little saccharine for my taste. A group of myself and my coworkers go to this greasy spoon for breakfast once a month, and my boss often puts syrup in his coffee when we're there. I thought this might be like that, but they've definitely added some extra zip.

I've been reading more lately, which has been nice. I used to be a voracious reader, but I've had less time lately for my hobbies and I feel like reading and music have gone onto the back-burner. My fiancèe got me a Kobo (the Chapters version of a Nook or Kindle) e-reader for my birthday, so that's kind of given me a kick in the butt to get back to reading. Her mother lent me a new Odd Thomas book by Dean Koontz last time she was in town. I realized that I had only read the first novel in the series (which I then suggested to her) and needed to play catch-up to read the new one. So I bought the second novel and I'm reading that.

Other than that I'm completely behind in my TV and movie watching, too. I just haven't felt like watching much! We usually watch Castle and Once Upon A Time every week, but since the Christmas break I've just been recording them on my PVR. The only show we've been watching with any regularity is Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's my fiancèe's favourite show and I've actually never watched it. The extent of my Star Trek knowledge falls to the new JJ Abram's movie and I think I've seen a few of the older movies here and there. I'm really enjoying TNG, though. We're at the start of the third season and going pretty strong.

The spring is finally just around the corner, and I can already feel the warmth. The snow is melting all around the yard, which means I have mowing in my future (ugh), but also barbecues and fresh air, which will be nice. Maybe I'll even get some more hiking in this year! I always enjoy hiking and camping, but we rarely get out to enjoy it enough.

Anyway, I think that was quite long enough. If you've read it all, good for you! I appreciate it. I think I just needed to write something and I couldn't think of much in the gaming realm. I dunno if this will be regular thing, but who knows!

Peace,
Surf

That starwars mug is awesome, man!  I love ST: The Next Generation too, so your fiance has great taste!

it's almost ninety degrees here in arizona.  It's hot!  I'm glad spring has sprung though, it was a little cold!

Haha, that she does! I'm really liking the show. I remember that I tried a few episodes of Voyager when it first came out, but ended up not liking it. A friend of mine was into TNG, so I saw some of those movies.

That's awesome your adapater lets you play with a SNES controller. I always had a soft spot for that controller. Luckily my FC Twin lets me use them with NES games. As much as I love the NES, it's hard going back to that controller lol.

I'm a big fan of Dean Koontz. My favorites were Intensity, Mr. Murder, and Dragon Tears. You ever read those?

I've read Intensity and loved it. Don't think I've read the rest. My mother has all of his books at her place, so next time I'm home I might raid her library, haha.

Randup, huh? Pretty clever! I may have to steal borrow that concept. Laughing That adapter looks very nice. Good catch on that. I'm a big coffee drinker, too. I love the hazelnut creamer in my cups. I also used to read Dean Koontz a lot when I was a teenager. My favorites were Midnight and Lightning. Oh, and TNG was definitely my favorite of the Star Trek shows! I'm collecting the Blu Ray versions of the seasons that have been coming out. They're pricey, but so worth it to have them in hi def.

TNG and coffee for the win! Oh, and feel free to borrow away, haha.

Great thinking on how to get around your problem with playing GB games on teh GameCube.  Also, that Star Wars mug is up there with some of the coolest things I've ever seen.  Every time you drink coffee from that mug, it's epicness in every sip.

Exactly! The Empire Strikes Back is one of my favourite movies. I saw it one day in an HMV and had to pick it up.

Dude, I seriously need one of those adapters! Super sick that it works with the Wii as well!

Surfcaster

Yeah, it was actually advertised for use with the Wii on the package, but it's through the GC port, so it works with both. I guess you'd have to have a Wii with the GC ports, now that I think of it!

Mmm...coffee! This won't help you, because I don't think they do k-cups, but there's an awesome local (to me) coffee roaster that does some amazing coffee. Wicked Joe is my favorite coffee roaster, if you go to the site and click on their Special Project Coffees and read down the list, you'll figure out why. Plus, the coffee is excellent.

As for Star Trek, I grew up on the original. I hate the JJ Abrams reboot with a passion, by the way. I'll always love the original series, but I think my favorite series may be Deep Space Nine.

I think I want to watch Deep Space Nine next, although I hear it's on a space station, so there's no exploring?

Space station next to a worm hole. Plenty of exploration opportunities.

Sweet mug. Too bad I only drink water. I used to drink coffee, but it wasn't the black, zero calorie type, it was the stuff that's basically candy with some ground coffee beans somewhere in the watery mix.Calorie diet = way less coffee in my case.

I need to get Castlevania Circle of the Moon.

I heard Star Trek:TNG. Love that show! It got me into the Star Trek series, and because of Hulu Plus I'm watching it again. I'm not a flavored coffee person either, but I want to try Maple Syrup in coffee.

It's a great show! I had no interest in Star Trek, honestly. Not that I didn't like it, just had no ambition to watch it, but now that I am I get all the hype. It's a really fun show. The visual effects in the early episodes are great for the late 80s, too.
