Pixlbit Questionaire #3

Posted on 10/19/2015 at 02:41 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Super Mario Bros. 3 is the final grand statement of the console and every console has a game like this, a title that feels like a proper sendoff to the console and states "this is what this machine and its software was capable of". I've probably played it more times than any of the other SMB NES-era games (and any other NES game) for the obvious reason: it's simply a masterpiece.

The Legend of Zelda as well because it was the first time I truly felt I was inhabiting a game world that was huge and full of secrets. Also still fun to play after all these years.

Contra was one of the best action games, either solo or co-op and I still play it at least once every year.

Dr. Mario was easy to get into, harder to handle the longer you got into it and full of charm.

Sunday Question: "What is Your Favorite Video Game Movie??"

Posted on 10/19/2015 at 02:27 PM | Filed Under Blogs

This isn't going to be a popular answer but I really like the first Silent Hills movie. Due to his adaptation of Crying Freeman and (especially) Brotherhood of the Wolf, I became a huge fan of Christophe Gans. He was a huge fan of the SH series (especially the first two games) and the film feels like a balanced tribute and respectful reworking of the first game's plot. It isn't as scary as you'd think or want but its very atmospheric, beautifully shot and has plenty of disturbing moments.

1997 in Film

Posted on 08/21/2015 at 03:07 PM | Filed Under Blogs

My most recent podcast episode covered some of what I watched in 1997 (it was notable for the first time that I bluffed my way into an R-rated film: Con Air). Face/Off was a huge film for me; I saw it 3 times (also bluffed my way in).

Other favorites that I saw at the cinema that year:
Men In Black (still holds up)
The Fifth Element (same though its corny, very French humor & Chris Tucker gets in the way)
Dante's Peak (the better of the two volcano films)
Jackie Chan's First Strike
Star Wars SE trilogy (had such a good time at these)
The Saint (ugh)
Anaconda (double ugh)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (had its moments)
Air Force One ("Get off my plane!")
Conspiracy Theory (still holds up; great Mel Gibson performance)
The Game (because David Fincher and Michael Douglas rock)
L.A. Confidential (best film of that year)
The Peacemaker (competently done but not memorable)
Kiss The Girls (remember when Ashley Judd was a huge box office draw and rightfully so?)
I Know What You Did Last Summer (self-appointed King of Jump Scares; good use of Type O Negative's cover of "Summer Breeze")
Starship Troopers (a lot of fun and the satire wasn't noticable until future viewings. Until then, it was about big-ass bugs, gore and nude Dina Meyer)
Alien: Resurrection (One day I'll see this again to know how I feel but holy shit, what a letdown)
Scream 2 (as good a sequel as one could make to Scream; David Arquette's entrance to the tune of a Hans Zimmer music cue from Broken Arrow IS SOME FUNNY SHIT)
Amistad (overlong and a bit obvious but plenty of riveting, heartbreaking sequences)
Titanic (a good movie. Overrated but solid. Also, nude Kate WInselt)
Tomorrow Never Dies (the start of the downward slope for Brosnan-era Bond films)

Cary's Summer Movie Checklist 2015

I highly recommend Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation. I think it's my favorite of the series so far.

Seeing's how I'm starting to work nights now, that would only leave Saturdays and Sundays as my availability.

At the very least, the gunfight was beautifully executed, I thought. I do slightly agree with Roger Ebert's take on the film where he felt the 3rd act was so action-heavy and then abruptly ended, as though it was missing the 3rd act. For me, that's where the sequels come in and I've always felt they zigged where people expected them to zag and that's one of the things I love about them.

I don't know if I'm an ideal guest but I'll definitely tune into whatever you release. Good luck!

A new solo episode of The Past And The Pending!

Thank you! I'll circle back to games pretty soon, either on a future solo project or whenever a guest is available to do a Skype call. I need to touch on tv as well.

Why do I like HARD things?

I loved Cloud Atlas and I think they did as good a job as anyone could with the theatrical cut. Apparently there's a unreleased 4 hour cut that's reportedly even better (Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer, has seen it). I haven't finished Sense8 yet but I enjoy what I've seen so far.

Why Bloodborne Doesn't Hold Up To the Souls Series

I'm still in my first playthrough for Bloodborne and I'm really digging it. I rarely engage in NG+'s and wasn't considering doing so for this game.
