Do We Really Need Everything In HD?

Posted on 10/17/2013 at 08:56 AM | Filed Under Blogs

When HD remasters of games and movies are done well, the results can truly be impressive. I for one would like to see this entertainment in the highest quality possible and I've bought and watched plenty of films on blu-ray that blew the SD DVDs away, pure and simple. Standard definition presentations on HDTVs aren't VHS-level abysmal but they can only go so far.

As for games, I've only dabbled in this area just recently (e.g., Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Ratchet & Clank trilogy, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3) with my PS3 and Vita and in most cases, I found the purchases very affordable and the results pleasing to the eye and ear (in the case of SotC, it's probably a matter of framerate improvement, but whatever).

It was easy for me think upgrading to DVD from VHS was worthwhile but it did take time. I resisted blu-ray for as long as I could until the price was affordable and the library was bigger and I'm still building. There are still plenty of dvds in my collection but I keep those for sentimental value or other reasons (out of print, artwork, features not ported to blu-ray). I've been content with blu-ray but I'm not sure that the jump to the next format will be that easy for me; the bar has truly been raised.

PS2 Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

I never shop at Gamestop. Thankfully there are other stores in my area but you may not be so lucky.

I'm pretty sure both Microsoft and Sony officially stated that they plan to support their current-gen systems for another 3 years (at the most, anyway).

Good luck with that. I don't have it in me to Platinum anything. Yet.

Thanks, sir! I can't imagine how tedious or frustrating handling parking would be so I'm glad that it doesn't figure in my duties. I also can't imagine how bad your hip must feel. Ouch!

Good point. Forgot about that.

Eulogy to an old lover: Street Fighter Alpha 3

I loved the PS1 port of this game. I still have it just in case I feel nostalgic. I never had a problem with the artwork; it fits the tone and world of the game, not to mention the franchise as a whole.

I didn't see it on your list but I wonder if you ever played Star Trek 25th Anniversary. It's a mixture of adventure and flight simulator; that's my favorite in a genre that I admittedly am ignorant of.

Crowds just litter. It's disgusting but expected. I've spent the last 6 years of this job cleaning after athletic events and while there are some people who are responsible and dispose their trash properly, a lot of them take these venues for granted and are irresponsible. What can you do? I still can't get over kids who just won't flush a toilet or urinal.

I've finished GC before on PS2 with neither the armor or Zodiac as well. When I bought the HD trilogy, I saw it as an opportunity to do some things I didn't the last time (and I had long ago sold my PS2 copies) but I forgot just what a massive undertaking that would be. I forgot about the 2nd playthrough though. I'm at the last boss right now, too. I would just like to know what it feels like use the Zodiac or the RYNO. At this point, I've fully explored the desert and ice planets and all the arena challenges. The only thing I haven't done is the race levels; I HATE THOSE.

Speaking of that last frozen planet, I originally hated farming for moonstones. Those snowman enemies were bad enough but the dragons that pop out jack-in-the-box style scared the shit out of me.

This takes me back. I owned this back when I had a N64. I agree that it's a very good port. I even liked the PS1 and XBLA ports.

As far as why it hasn't been released digitally? Chalk that up to the fact that Midway Games no longer exists (well, technically its Netherrealm Studios now) so it may be a license rights issue. Never say never, I guess.

I really want Diablo III as well. If it plays as well as Torchlight on XBLA, it'll be great. I have X-Com on PS3 but I haven't played it yet.
